La scultura del giorno di cui voglio parlarvi oggi è la Vergognosa scolpita da Donato Barcaglia nel 1871, oggi appartenente al Museo Revoltella di Trieste, istituito nel 1872.

L’opera fu acquistata dal Curatorio del museo per 1.441,15 fiorini poco dopo la sua creazione per arricchire le proprie collezioni.

Lo scultore Donato Barcaglia era nato a Pavia nel 1849 e visse quasi sempre a Milano, escludendo i numerosi viaggi in giro per l’Italia e all’estero in occasioni delle esposizioni internazionali o per acquisire importanti commissioni.

Il suo innato talento gli permise di essere notato fin da giovanissimo per le proprie abilità di artista tanto che a soli trent’anni poteva vantare un prestigioso atelier nel quale i suoi aiuti realizzavano repliche delle sue opere richieste in tutto il mondo.

Nella Vergognosa così come nelle altre opere da lui realizzate, Barcaglia mostrò elevate abilità creative ed esecutive. Il marmo era il materiale che preferiva lavorare e sotto le sue mani pareva si plasmasse alla stregua di argilla.

Mirabile la veste panneggiata che sta scivolando dal corpo della Vergognosa con le bordure delle maniche in pizzo di Sangallo e l’atteggiamento della ragazza che mentre si svela sembra far finta di nascondersi lasciando però il corpo a vista.

La Vergognosa è un tipico esempio della scultura di genere che era particolarmente apprezzato nell’Ottocento. Affascinano il realismo della figura e la sua spiccata sensualità

The sculpture of the day that I want to talk to you about today is the Vergognosa sculpted by Donato Barcaglia in 1871, now belonging to the Revoltella Museum in Trieste, established in 1872.

The work was purchased by the museum curator for 1,441.15 florins shortly after its creation to enrich its collections.

The sculptor Dona Barcaglia was born in Pavia in 1849 and almost always lived in Milan, excluding the numerous trips around Italy and abroad on the occasion of international exhibitions or to acquire important commissions.

His innate talent allowed him to be noticed from a very young age for his skills as an artist, so much so that at just thirty years of age he could boast a prestigious atelier in which his assistants created replicas of his works requested all over the world.

In Vergognosa as well as in the other works he created, Barcaglia showed high creative and executive skills. Marble was the material he preferred to work with and under his hands it seemed to mold like clay.

Admirable is the draped dress that is slipping from the body of the Vergognosa with the borders of the short sleeves in Sangallo lace and the attitude of the girl who, while she reveals herself, seems to pretend to hide while leaving her body exposed.

The Vergognosa is a typical example of the genre sculpture that was particularly appreciated in the nineteenth century. The realism of the figure and its marked sensuality fascinate.
