Il 23 maggio del 1886 a Firenze moriva lo scultore Adriano Cecioni. Per ricordarlo nel giorno della sua scomparsa vi propongo una sua opera non così celebre ma non per questo meno bella: il Bambino col Gallo.

Cecioni ebbe una vita assai complicata, piena di alti e bassi continui e segnata da una disgrazia che gli pesò per il resto della sua esistenza. Meno nota della Madre a cui il Carducci volle dedicare meravigliosi versi, la scultura del Bambino col Gallo fu realizzata dall’artista in gesso 1868.

Quel trasferimento improvviso deriva da una grande delusione con cui l’artista dovette fare i conti nella sua terra natìa, in Italia. A Firenze il suo estro artistico non solo non fu riconosciuto ma fortemente ostacolato. Non riusciva a sopravvivere con il frutto del suo lavoro e quindi decise di buttare il cuore oltre l’ostacolo.

Il suo amico e collega De Nittis lavorava in Francia con un discreto successo fin dal 1867 e Cecioni, in cuor suo, sperava di ottenere la medesima ascesa. Si fece coraggio e gli inviò da Firenze alcune fotografie del Bambino col Gallo in gesso che aveva modellato al termine del 1868.

De Nittis a sua volta propose quelle foto ad alcuni amici e il pittore francese Vibert se ne innamorò commissionando a Cecioni la versione in marmo della scultura.

Incoraggiato da quella tanto sperata commissione, partì alla volta di Parigi assieme alla moglie Luisa Maiorino e ai due figliò Arrivò in città nel 1870 e De Nittis lo ospitò a casa sua.

Cecioni ebbe modo di presentare il Bambino con Gallo al Salon di Parigi del 1870 suscitando l’interesse da parte di un gran numero di persone. Con il consenso di Vibert che possedeva l’opera in marmo, il mercante americano Stuart acquistò da Cecioni il diritto di riprodurre l’opera in bronzo.

Le cose però ben presto si mostrarono meno rosee di quanto sperato. A Cecioni non andava a genio il modo di produrre e commerciare opere nel mondo dell’arte a Parigi mentre De Nittis in quell’ambiente si trovava a suo agio. Non riuscì ad adattarsi al mercato e i suoi rapporti con l’artista amico si deteriorarono rapidamente.

Cecioni alla fine del 1870 rientrò a Firenze con la famiglia ma purtroppo una delle figlie morì aumentando così lo stato di malessere che stava vivendo lo scultore.

Nella scultura di Cecioni è notevole la resa della reazione del bambino che prende in braccio il gallo di sorpresa. L’artista a lungo studiò proprio la psicologia dei bambini per poter dar corpo e anima a sculture che li riproducessero nella vita quotidiana.

Sculpture of the day: the Child with the Rooster by Cecioni

On May 23, 1886, the sculptor Adriano Cecioni died in Florence. To remember him on the day of his disappearance, I offer you one of his not so famous but no less beautiful works: the Child with the Rooster.

Cecioni had a very complicated life, full of continuous ups and downs and marked by a misfortune that weighed on him for the rest of his existence. Less known than the Mother to whom Carducci wanted to dedicate wonderful verses, the sculpture of the Child with the Rooster was created by the artist in plaster in 1868..

That sudden transfer derives from a great disappointment with which the artist had to deal with in his native land, in Italy. In Florence his artistic flair was not only not recognized but strongly hindered. He could not survive with the fruit of his work and therefore decided to throw his heart over the obstacle.

His friend and colleague De Nittis had been working in France with some success since 1867 and Cecioni, in his heart, hoped to obtain the same ascent. He took courage and sent him from Florence some photographs of the Child with the Rooster in plaster that he had modeled at the end of 1868.

De Nittis in turn proposed those photos to some friends and the French painter Vibert fell in love with them by commissioning the marble version of the sculpture from Cecioni.

Encouraged by that much hoped-for commission, he left for Paris together with his wife Luisa Maiorino and his two children. He arrived in the city in 1870 and De Nittis hosted him at his home.

Cecioni was able to present the Child with Rooster at the Paris Salon in 1870, arousing the interest of a large number of people. With the consent of Vibert who owned the marble work, the American merchant Stuart bought from Cecioni the right to reproduce the work in bronze.

However, things soon turned out to be less rosy than hoped. Cecioni did not like the way of producing and trading works in the art world in Paris while De Nittis was at ease with him in that environment. He failed to adapt to the market and his relationship with the artist friend deteriorated rapidly.

At the end of 1870 Cecioni returned to Florence with his family but unfortunately one of his daughters died thus increasing the state of malaise that the sculptor was experiencing.

In Cecioni’s sculpture, the rendering of the reaction of the child who takes the rooster in his arms by surprise is remarkable. The artist studied the psychology of children for a long time in order to give body and soul to sculptures that reproduced them in everyday life.
