Era una domenica quel 22 maggio del 1762 quando, sul calar della sera, fu inaugurata in grande stile la Fontana di Trevi da Papa Clemente XIII Rezzonico, dopo trent’anni di cantiere.

La storia della più celebre fontana del mondo ebbe inizio quando papa Clemente XII indisse un concorso per realizzare costruire la mostra dell’Acquedotto Vergine sulla facciata di Palazzo Poli. Era ed è tutt’oggi l’acquedotto più antico di Roma funzionante, risalente addirittura ai tempi dell’Imperatore Augusto. Lo fece realizzare lui affidando il progetto al genero Agrippa, sì proprio lo stesso architetto del Pantheon.

Fu Lambert Sigisbert Adam a vincere la competizione architettonica ma il papa preferì assegnare l’incarico a Nicola Salvi. Sigisbert aveva la necessità di ritornare a breve in Francia e, a detta del pontefice, non gli avrebbe fatto un buon servigio.

Vi siete mai chiesti perché la Fontana di Trevi si chiama proprio così?

All’inizio si chiamava di Trejo perché ubicata nella zona che aveva quel nome, riferito a trivio ovvero all’incrocio di tre vie. Con il passare del tempo Trejo è divenuto Trevi.

Nel 1740 i lavori furono interrotti bruscamente. I costi sempre più alti che stavano divenendo insostenibili pure per il papato e i litigi continui fra l’architetto Salvi e lo scultore Giovanni Battista Maini che doveva scolpire le opere della fontana, resero impossibile per due anni il proseguo del cantiere.

Nel 1751 Salvi morì, poco dopo morirono anche lo scultore Maini e il papa committente.

Giuseppe Pannini venne incaricato dal nuovo pontefice di proseguire e terminare i lavori in corso ma viste le sue numerose modifiche al progetto originale, venne liquidato e al suo posto subentrò Pietro Bracci.

E fu così che dopo trent’anni di cantiere, litigi, complicazioni e finanze che talvolta scarseggiavano, la sera del 22 maggio del 1762 finalmente papa Clemente XIII, con una cerimonia pomposa, inaugurò la Fontana di Trevi con le sue acque scroscianti.

It was a Sunday that 22 May 1762 when, at nightfall, the Trevi Fountain was inaugurated in grand style by Pope Clement XIII Rezzonico, after thirty years of construction.

The history of the most famous fountain in the world began when Pope Clement XII announced a competition to build the display of the Virgin Aqueduct on the facade of Palazzo Poli. It was and still is the oldest functioning aqueduct in Rome, dating back to the times of Emperor Augustus. He had it built by entrusting the project to his son-in-law Agrippa, yes exactly the same architect of the Pantheon.

In 1751 Salvi died, shortly after the sculptor Maini and the commissioning pope also died.

Giuseppe Pannini was commissioned by the new pontiff to continue and finish the work in progress but given his numerous modifications to the original project, he was liquidated and Pietro Bracci took his place.
