Il Giudizio Universale ancora oggi presenta delle importanti censure e non tutte realizzate da Daniele da Volterra. Se la questione vi fosse sfuggita, ve la racconto dal principio.

A Daniele da Volterra, mio stretto collaboratore e pure fedele amico, era stato affidato l’incarico di ricoprire le nudità del mio Giudizio Universale.

Iniziò a metter mano a quell’ingrato compito diversi mesi dopo la mia morte già che i ponteggi per quel lavoro furono montati nell’estate del 1564 da un falegname fiorentino.

Gli interventi censori riconducibili a Daniele da Volterra sono quelli relativi a San Biagio e Santa Caterina d’Alessandria con il rifacimento in affresco di parte delle due figure e le braghe apposte nella fascia orizzontale che comprende il Battista e il Cireneo tanto per darvi una collocazione nello spazio.

Quando poi Daniele da Volterra morì, fu affidato ad altri l’accanimento censorio che, fra interruzioni e riprese, durò fino all’Ottocento coinvolgendo ben 44 personaggi.

Ora dovete sapere che durante il colossale restauro del Giudizio Universale, il team di restauratori condotto magistralmente da Colalucci si chiese se rimuovere o mantenere le braghe.

Il tema era spinoso e fu sottoposto al gruppo di lavoro che seguiva il restauro. La discussione proseguì per quattro anni fra le due fazioni che si erano create: rimozione totale e conservazione integrale.

Fra queste due posizioni ce n’era una intermedia che avrebbe preferito mantenere le braghe storiche e rimuovere quelle realizzate dopo la fine del XVI secolo ed è poi quella che risultò vincente.

Dunque le braghe che vedete coprire ancora oggi alcune figure del Giudizio Universale sono quelle cinquecentesche, realizzate da Daniele da Volterra e da chi proseguì la sua opera come Girolamo da Fano e il Carnevali.

The censures left in the Last Judgment

Now you must know that during the colossal restoration of the Last Judgment, the team of restorers masterfully led by Colalucci wondered whether to remove or keep the breeches.

The subject was thorny and was submitted to the working group that followed the restoration. The discussion continued for four years between the two factions that had been created: total removal and integral conservation.

Between these two positions there was an intermediate one that would have preferred to keep the historical breeches and remove those made after the end of the 16th century and it is the one that turned out to be the winner.

So the breeches that you see still today covering some figures of the Last Judgment are those from the sixteenth century, made by Daniele da Volterra and by those who continued his work such as Girolamo da Fano and Carnevali.
