Il 9 febbraio del 1858 Casa Buonarroti che fino al momento era stata nelle mani dei miei eredi, fu donata alla città di Firenze divenendo poi un museo.

Fu Cosimo Buonarroti a istituire un ente morale che si facesse carico della cura dell’edificio ma anche delle preziose raccolte che conteneva, ponendo le basi fondamentali per il Museo di Casa Buonarroti che ancora abbiamo la sorte di poter visitare.

Casa Buonarroti si trova al numero 70 di via Ghibellina a Firenze, proprio all’angolo con via Buonarroti. In antichità via Michelangelo Buonarroti era nota col nome di via dei Marmi Sudici come ancora si può leggere su una targhetta apposta all’inizio della strada. 

Eh si, quei marmi sudici lì attendevano sempre che ci mettessi mano per cavarne fuori qualcosa di bello. Sempre preso in mille cose fra Firenze e Roma quei blocchi si sporcavano di polvere, fango e altra roba.

Casa Buonarroti oggi conserva la più grande collezione di miei disegni esistente anche se purtroppo, per ovvie ragioni conservative, non può essere esposta in maniera permanente.

Sempre visibili, se non sono andate in prestito in altre mostre in giro per il mondo, sono La Madonna della Scala e La Battaglia dei Centauri oltre a diversi bozzetti.

February 9, 1858: Casa Buonarroti becomes a museum

On February 9, 1858, Casa Buonarroti, which until then had been in the hands of my heirs, was donated to the city of Florence and later became a museum.

It was Cosimo Buonarroti who set up a non-profit organization which took charge of the care of the building but also of the precious collections it contained, laying the fundamental foundations for the Museum of Casa Buonarroti which we still have the good fortune to be able to visit.

Casa Buonarroti is located at number 70 of via Ghibellina in Florence, right on the corner with via Buonarroti. In ancient times via Michelangelo Buonarroti was known as via dei Marmi Mudici as can still be read on a plate affixed at the beginning of the road.

Casa Buonarroti today preserves the largest existing collection of my drawings even if unfortunately, for obvious conservation reasons, it cannot be exhibited permanently.

Always visible, if not loaned to other exhibitions around the world, are La Madonna della Scala and The Battle of the Centaurs as well as various sketches.
