The Angel Candlestick Holder
During my first stay in Bologna, I was welcomed into the house by Francesco Aldovrandi, a noble soul.
Thanks to his intercession, I was entrusted with the completion of the Ark of San Domenico: a valuable work that had remained unfinished after the death of Niccolò dell’Arca. So I set to work to make San Procolo, San Petronio and an Angelo Reggicandelabro. Here, today I really want to talk to you about this angel.
He is not the usual slender angel and little resembles his friend placed on the other side of the altar sculpted by Niccolò dell’Arca. He has a build much closer to that of an athlete.
His robe covers his legs which, by bowing, spreads apart. As he slightly rotates his torso he manages to keep his head erect with all those compact curls. He has an almost perplexed expression and a blank stare. The semi-open mouth allows you to see the teeth.
The light shirt peeps out from the neckline of the robe and the hems of the suit he is wearing can be clearly seen. It is assumed that this was the very first sculpture I made for the Ark.
It is a very rare work of mine of a celestial creature with wings. Perhaps the only one given the much discussed attribution of the drawings with the angels of the Annunciation and the well-known Madonna of Manchester, which was also much debated.
