Ero tutto preso a realizzare quella testa di un vecchio fauno quando sentii i passi di Lorenzo il Magnifico dietro di me. Avevo 13 anni appena e già ero alle prese con scalpello e martello nel Giardino di San Marco.

Certo non ero da solo in questo luogo d’istruzione e creazione. Assieme a me c’erano tanti talentuosi giovani seguiti da Bertoldo di Giovanni che a sua volta era stato allievo di Donatello.

Il Magnifico scrutò bene la scultura con attenzione e poi con aria bonaria mi disse che un fauno vecchio non avrebbe certo avuto quella dentatura così ben curata.

Prima che Lorenzo finisse di guardare tutte le opere fatte dagli altri ragazzi già avevo provveduto a trapanar un dente e a togliere l’altro col martello. Lui rimase molto colpito e fu proprio in quel momento che decise di accogliermi in casa sua e crescermi, fino alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1492, alla stregua di un figlio presso il palazzo di via Larga.

Mio padre accettò anche se con qualche riserva e in cambio ottenne un bel mantello rosso e un posto di lavoro in dogana pagato con otto sonanti scudi al mese.

Lo scultore Cesare Zocchi, a fine Ottocento dedicò una delle sue opere a me. Ve la propongo, non è deliziosa? Ritrae me poco più che bambino alle prese con la testa del fauno nel giardino di San Marco. Se volete vedere quest’opera con i vostri occhi non dovete far altro che avventurarvi fra le meravigliose sale della Galleria Palatina presso Palazzo Pitti, Firenze.

 I as a child and the head of a faun lost

I was totally absorbed in making that head of an old faun when I heard the footsteps of Lorenzo the Magnificent behind me. I was just 13 years old and I was already struggling with a chisel and hammer in the Garden of San Marco.

Of course I was not alone in this place of education and creation. With me there were many talented young people followed by Bertoldo di Giovanni who in turn had been a pupil of Donatello.

The Magnificent scrutinized the sculpture carefully and then with a good-natured air told me that an old faun would certainly not have had that well-kept set of teeth.

Before Lorenzo finished looking at all the works done by the other boys I had already proceeded to drill one tooth and remove the other with a hammer. He was very impressed and it was at that moment that he decided to welcome me into his house and raise me, until his death in 1492, like a son at the palace in via Larga.

My father accepted, albeit with some reservations, and in exchange he got a nice red cloak and a job in customs paid with eight resounding scudi a month.

The sculptor Cesare Zocchi, at the end of the nineteenth century dedicated one of his works to me. I propose it to you, isn’t it delicious? It portrays me little more than a child struggling with the head of the faun in the garden of San Marco.
