Michelangelo 550: affrescando la volta della Sistina con papa Giulio II
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, voglio proporvi oggi un disegno in cui un artista non noto ha voluto disegnare me alle prese con la volta della Cappella Sistina.
In piedi sulla parte più alta del tavolato dei ponteggi abbigliato di verde, ho sopra la sagoma di Giona, ancora tutto da affrescare. Fu proprio quello l’ultimo veggente della volta a cui misi mano, concludendo il ciclo senza sapere che ne stavo avviando un altro: quello che anni dopo avrei realizzato lì sotto, ovvero il celeberrimo Giudizio Universale.
Mentre sto intingendo con entrambe le mani i pennelli dotati di prolunga nel colore, un rumore sospetto mi fa guardare verso il basso.
Mi rendo conto che lo scricchiolio udito è quello provocato da papa Giulio II della Rovere che si sta arrampicando su per i ponteggi. Stavo per concludere i lavori della volta quindi, facendo un rapido calcolo, all’epoca aveva 69 anni e sarebbe morto l’anno successivo.
Il papa che m’aveva commissionato quella grandiosa opera poco godette del risultato finito, infatti ma ebbe comunque modo di vedere l’opera conclusa, compiacendosi grandemente di quella importante commissione.
Importante quasi quanto la sua sepoltura della quale era particolarmente orgoglioso anche se mai la vide e non si sarebbe immaginato quante riduzioni fui costretto a fare dalle circostanze con i suoi eredi, e quanta fatica ancora mi sarebbe costata.
Mi preme sottolineare quanto chi realizzò questo disegno si attenne a creare, con la propria fantasia, ponteggi con poco cordame, così come lì avevo pensati e fatti realizzare io.
La foresta di canapi che aveva pensato in un primo momento il Bramante l’avevo fatta buttare giù ma questa è un’altra storia e ve ne ho parlato nel dettaglio QUA.

Michelangelo 550: Frescoing the Sistine Chapel Ceiling with Pope Julius II
To celebrate the 550th anniversary of my birth, today I want to show you a drawing in which an unknown artist wanted to draw me grappling with the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Standing on the highest part of the green-clad scaffolding, I have above me the silhouette of Jonah, still to be frescoed. That was the last seer of the ceiling that I started, concluding the cycle without knowing that I was starting another: the one that years later I would create down there, namely the very famous Last Judgement.
While I am dipping the brushes with extensions in the paint with both hands, a suspicious noise makes me look down.
I realize that the creaking I hear is that of Pope Julius II who is climbing up the scaffolding. I was about to finish the work on the vault so, doing a quick calculation, at the time he was 69 years old and would die the following year.
The pope who had commissioned that grandiose work from me was in fact not very happy with the finished result but he still had the opportunity to see the completed work, greatly pleased with that important commission.
Almost as important as his burial of which he was particularly proud even if he never saw it and would not have imagined how many reductions I was forced to make by circumstances with his heirs and how much more effort it would cost me.
I would like to underline how much the person who created this design was careful to create, with his own imagination, scaffolding with little rope, just as I had thought of it and had it made.
