“Oltre la superficie. Lo sguardo del restauratore“ è il nuovo percorso integrativo, interattivo e diffuso che i Musei Vaticani propongono ai visitatori per scoprire i segreti, le tecniche, le curiosità, i dettagli e gli aneddoti custoditi dalle opere d’arte e rivelati durante le diverse fasi del restauro.

In occasione del centenario del Laboratorio di Restauro Dipinti e Materiali lignei fondato nel 1923 per volere di papa Pio XI dall’allora direttore Bartolomeo Nogara, i Musei Vaticani aggiungono un prezioso tassello alle loro collezioni ovvero il racconto del restauro delle opere d’arte e ciò che talvolta viene scoperto durante le fasi della diagnostica che precedono l’intervento materiale.

A partire dall’11 dicembre 2023 e per i seguenti dodici mesi, all’interno dei Musei saranno presenti 27 paline smart dotate di codice QR attraverso il quale, adoperando i proprio smartphone, si accede automaticamente a contenuti aggiuntivi relativi alle opere esposte.

I visitatori potranno così accedere virtualmente ai ponteggi di un cantiere di restauro, apprezzare i dettagli dei dipinti presenti al di sotto dello strato pittorico per scoprire quei segreti che i restauratori si ritrovano all’improvviso sotto gli occhi come per esempio le impronte digitali di Leonardo nel San Girolamo, i segni sulla tavola della Madonna della Cintola di Benozzo Gozzoli o gli affreschi di Pinturicchio ritrovati al di sotto una stoffa da parati nell’Appartamento Borgia.

Sono molte le curiosità proposte poco note al grande pubblico.

Qualche esempio? Il ritrovamento dei colori originali di Raffaello nella Pala Oddi e le scoperte fatte sulla tecnica utilizzata da Caravaggio per dipingere la Deposizione di Cristo.

Il Laboratorio Restauro Dipinti e Materiali lignei è quello di tradizione più antica che abbiamo ai Musei e anche quello più numeroso in termini di persone. Questo è un centenario importante perché racconta di tante cose fatte: dal ‘restauro del secolo’ della Cappella Sistina a quello delle Stanze di Raffaello, o dell’appartamento Borgia; ma anche tanti altri restauri che testimoniano l’attenzione dei Musei del Papa alle opere di devozione presenti sul territorio. Un’attenzione che si esprime attraverso la conoscenza e il bagaglio culturale che i nostri professionisti tecnici restauratori altamente specializzati portano avanti da secoli. Beyond the surface: the restorer’s gaze on display at the Vatican Museums

“Beyond the surface. The restorer’s gaze” is the new integrative, interactive and widespread path that the Vatican Museums offer visitors to discover the secrets, techniques, curiosities, details and anecdotes preserved by the works of art and revealed during the different phases of restoration.

On the occasion of the centenary of the Laboratory for the Restoration of Paintings and Wooden Materials founded in 1923 at the behest of Pope Pius which is sometimes discovered during the diagnostic phases preceding the material intervention.

Starting from 11 December 2023 and for the following twelve months, inside the Museums there will be 27 smart poles equipped with a QR code through which, using your smartphone, you can automatically access additional content relating to the works on display.

Visitors will thus be able to virtually access the scaffolding of a restoration site, appreciate the details of the paintings present beneath the pictorial layer to discover those secrets that restorers suddenly find before their eyes such as, for example, Leonardo’s fingerprints in San Girolamo, the signs on the panel of the Madonna della Cintola by Benozzo Gozzoli or the frescoes by Pinturicchio found under a wallpaper in the Borgia Apartment.

There are many curiosities proposed that are little known to the general public.

Any examples? The discovery of Raphael’s original colors in the Oddi Altarpiece and the discoveries made on the technique used by Caravaggio to paint the Deposition of Christ.

The Paintings and Wooden Materials Restoration Laboratory is the oldest tradition we have in the Museums and also the largest in terms of people. This is an important centenary because it tells of many things done: from the ‘restoration of the century’ of the Sistine Chapel to that of Raphael’s Rooms, or the Borgia apartment; but also many other restorations that testify to the attention of the Pope’s Museums to the works of devotion present in the area. An attention that is expressed through the knowledge and cultural background that our highly specialized technical restorer professionals have been carrying forward for centuries.
