The portrait that Van Dyck took of me
What I propose to you is the portrait that Antoon Van Dick took of me, which today belongs to the Devonshire collection in Chartsworth.
Van Dick never had the opportunity to cross his path with mine: when he was born in Flanders, in 1599, I had been dead for several years. However, he became acquainted with my works during his short stay in Italy and thought it best to pay homage to me with a portrait.
The drawing dates back to 1608 and although he never knew me, he gave that face a melancholic appearance in which I recognize myself.
It is a drawing inspired by the best-known paintings, busts and drawings made in previous years that my closest friends made, such as Daniele da Volterra, just to name one. Made in red and white chalk, the work gives me a solemn, intense and not without disturbance.
For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you and will meet you in future posts and on social media.
