Oggi vi porto con me all’interno della Cappella Sistina per invitarvi ad osservare il pennacchio con la Punizione di Aman. Lo trovare guardando nell’angolo della volta compreso fra Giona ubicato immediatamente sopra il Giudizio Universale e il profeta Geremia.

È la narrazione di uno dei quattro episodi delle miracolose salvazioni del popolo di Israele, tutte interpretabili come la prefigurazione del Messia. Questi racconti biblici dell’Antico Testamento sono infatti una testimonianza della presenza di Dio costante e il rinnovarsi della promessa della redenzione.

Costituiscono l’anello di congiunzione fra i riquadri che dipinsi nella volta e le storie dei quattrocentisti affrescate nel secondo registro della Sistina.

Nel pennacchio in questione raffigurai in un unico momento pittorico tutta la storia di Aman.

Aman viene citato nel Libro di Ester della Bibbia. Il re persiano Assuero lo nominò visir ma lui non si fece scrupoli e cercò di sterminare l’intero popolo ebraico. Il re non ebbe pietà per lui che nessuna pietà aveva mostrato di avere e lo uccise.

Fatto curioso è che nella Bibbia Aman non viene crocifisso usando una croce a ipsilon ma fatto spirare per impiccagione. Non è che non conoscessi bene quella parte delle Sacre Scritture ma preferii di gran lunga dipingere un chiaro parallelismo con la crocifissione di Cristo.

La figura che cattura tutta l’attenzione del grande pennacchio è lo straordinario scorcio prospettico del corpo di Aman.

Sapete, impiegai tre giornate per cominciare e concludere quella porzione di affresco mentre per completare tutto il pennacchio di giornate me e servirono ventuno.

Lo scorcio di Aman fu un’invenzione che destò l’ammirazione di un gran numero artisti dopo di me, primo su tutti Caravaggio che volle citarlo nello slancio in avanti del braccio sinistro nella Cena in Emmaus, oggi alla National Gallery di Londra.

Studiai a lungo il vertiginoso scorcio prospettico mostrato dal visir per dargli forza ma al contempo drammaticità.

Ne è testimonianza il disegno del Teylers Museum di Haarlem con gli studi che feci di Aman e delle sue braccia viste di scorcio.

Sistine Chapel: the spandrel with the Punishment of Haman

Today I take you with me inside the Sistine Chapel to invite you to observe the plume with the Punishment of Haman. Find it by looking at the corner of the vault between Jonah located immediately above the Last Judgment and the prophet Jeremiah.

It is the narration of one of the four episodes of the miraculous salvations of the people of Israel, all of which can be interpreted as the prefiguration of the Messiah. These biblical stories from the Old Testament are in fact a testimony of the constant presence of God and the renewal of the promise of redemption.

They form the link between the panels I painted on the vault and the stories of the 15th century frescoed in the second register of the Sistine Chapel.

In the plume in question I depicted the whole story of Aman in a single pictorial moment.

Haman is mentioned in the Bible’s Book of Esther. The Persian king Assuero appointed him vizier but he had no qualms and tried to exterminate the entire Jewish people. The king had no mercy for him that no mercy had shown and killed him.

A curious fact is that in the Bible Haman is not crucified using a cross with an upsilon but made to expire by hanging. It’s not that I didn’t know that part of the Holy Scriptures well but I much preferred to paint a clear parallel with the crucifixion of Christ.

The figure that captures all the attention of the great plume is the extraordinary perspective glimpse of the body of Aman.

You know, it took me three days to start and finish that portion of the fresco, while it took me and twenty-one to complete the entire plume of days.

The foreshortening of Aman was an invention that aroused the admiration of a large number of artists after me, first of all Caravaggio who wanted to quote it in the forward thrust of his left arm in the Supper at Emmaus, now in the National Gallery in London.

I studied for a long time the dizzying perspective glimpse shown by the vizier to give it strength but at the same time drama.
