La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la grande Santa Veronica, ubicata in una nicchia dei quattro piloni che sorreggono il peso della cupola di San Pietro.

Fu il frutto di una lunga gestazione da parte Bernini prima e Francesco Mochi poi, che iniziò a lavorarci nel 1629 e la terminò nel 1640, dopo undici anni.

Ora dovete sapere che la reliquia del sudario sul quale è impresso il volto di Cristo, è la reliquia più preziosa delle quattro presenti nelle nicchie superiori dei piloni, accessibili per mezzo di una scala a chiocciola che viene usata dai prelati abitualmente per l’ostensione delle stesse durante la Settimana Santa.

Proprio per la sacralità della reliquia, il Bernini dedicò allo studio della scultura della Veronica molto tempo sia per quanto riguarda la sua collocazione che la sua posa.

Volle poi affidarne l’esecuzione allo scultore Francesco Mochi, nato a Montevarchi nel 1580. Iniziò a mettere mano al modello in gesso nel 1629 mentre attendeva l’arrivo dei marmi da Carrara per poterla scolpire.

Nel luglio del 1643 finalmente i blocchi per la Veronica ma anche per il San Longino, Sant’Elena e per il Sant’Andrea arrivarono a destinazione e i quattro scultori, Mochi compreso, iniziarono a mettere mano alle rispettive sculture.

Tutte le quattro opere non sono state ricavate da un unico blocco ma sono formate da più pezzi. Con il movimento che hanno nello spazio sarebbe servito un blocco enorme, assai difficile da portare da Carrara a Roma ma anche da scolpire, sprecando inutilmente un sacco di materiale.

Il 4 novembre del 1640 la Santa Veronica posizionata nella nicchia a cui anche il Borromini aveva messo mano e presentata in via ufficiale alla presenza di papa Urbano VIII. Al pontefice piacque molto ma l’artista non era completamente soddisfatto del suo lavoro e nemmeno il Bernini parve entusiasta del risultato finale.

Sulla base dell’opera si legge la firma dell’artista FRANCISCUS. MOCHIUS A MONTE VARCHI FACIEBAT.

La Veronica scolpita è tutt’altro che quieta. Mentre corre in avanti le vesti le si scompigliano e dalla bocca pare stia uscendo un grido. Mostra il velo con il volto di Cristo tenuto fra le due mani che ha sorpreso pure lei.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the great Saint Veronica, located in a niche of the four pillars that support the weight of the dome of Saint Peter’s.
