Fui un disegnatore tremendamente efficace ma non fu solo talento il mio.

Al momento della nascita mi fu concesso il dono del saper osservare ma non sarei stato così abile nell’arte del disegno prima e nella pratica della scultura poi senza un impegno costante.

Il talento senza l’esercizio continuo sarebbe svanito poco a poco senza lasciarmi nella mente e nel cuore la voglia di migliorare sempre di più, di riuscire a rendere tangibili le idee che mi passavano per la testa.

Il mio fu uno “studio matto e disperatissimo” citando a posteri Leopardi. Non c’era giorno che mi limitassi nella pratica del disegno.

Cominciai da bimbetto mosso dal desiderio di diventare un bravo scultore fino al giorno in cui chiusi definitivamente gli occhi. In fondo il disegno è il padre di tutte le arti. Senza essere abile in quello avrei fatto poca strada.

Se agli esordi della mia carriera, mentre studiavo le opere dal vero dei grandi maestri del passato come Masaccio e Masolino, ero assai accurato nella riproduzione di forme e volumi, con il passare dei decenni acquisii il dono della sintesi anche nel disegno.

Non mi era possibile mettere in pratica questo metodo con i disegni architettonici che per necessità di cose dovevano essere accurati ma lo adoperavo costantemente con le figure.

Nella mia produzione grafica sono presenti disegni dettagliati, come i noti presentation drawing, e schizzi assai sommari che però rendono benissimo l’idea di cosa avessi voluto riprodurre su carta.

I was a tremendously effective draftsman but it wasn’t just my talent. At birth I was granted the gift of knowing how to observe but I would not have been so skilled in the art of drawing first and then in the practice of sculpture without a constant commitment.

Talent without continuous exercise would have faded little by little without leaving in my mind and heart the desire to improve more and more, to be able to make the ideas that passed through my head tangible.

Mine was a “crazy and desperate study” quoting Leopardi for posterity. There wasn’t a day that I limited myself in the practice of drawing: I started as a little boy moved by the desire to become a good sculptor until the day I closed my eyes for good. After all, drawing is the father of all the arts. Without being skilled in that I would have gone a short way.

If at the beginning of my career, while I was studying the life works of the great masters of the past such as Masaccio and Masolino, I was very accurate in the reproduction of shapes and volumes, over the decades I acquired the gift of synthesis also in drawing.

It was not possible for me to put this method into practice with the architectural drawings which by necessity had to be accurate but I used it constantly with the figures.

In my graphic production there are detailed drawings such as the well-known presentation drawings and very summary sketches which however give a very good idea of what I wanted to reproduce on paper.
