Alla Pietà Bandini manca una gamba. La questione è evidente, c’è poco da discutere in merito. Nel corso della storia forse qualcuno quella gamba però l’aveva rifatta o aveva provato a rifarla.

Sedetevi comodi che questa storia è lunghetta ma merita un po’ della vostra preziosa attenzione.

La Pietà Bandini era in origine destinata alla mia sepoltura ma il marmo duro accidentato faceva scintille ad ogni colpo di subbia. Preso dalla rabbia gli sferrai qualche martellata ben assestata e la frantumai in diverse parti.

Non è chiaro se la gamba saltò via a causa del mio sfogo o fu proprio il saltar via accidentale della gamba che mi mosse a compiere quell’atto. Lasciamo il beneficio del dubbio.

Così malconcia e ancora non ultimata, volli donare l’opera ad Antonio del Francese di Castel Durante, mio servitore.

Tiberio Calcagni al tempo era un giovane scultore e pure assistente mio e segnalò al banchiere Francesco Bandini la presenza di quest’opera. Il Calcagni in qualche modo si sentiva in debito col Bandini perché proprio lui assieme al Giannotti me lo avevano presentato tempo prima affinché lo prendessi al mio servizio.

La Pietà così finì nelle mani del Bandini anche se non si sa bene se come dono oppure, più probabilmente, la pagò lautamente ad Antonio del Francese che ne era entrato in possesso.

Wasserman sostiene che il mio collaboratore fu ricompensato con 200 scudi dal Bandini e con il successivo dono della Pietà Rondanini.

Quello che è certo che io fui d’accordo con quella cessione ma a un patto: il Calcagni avrebbe dovuto portarla a termine adoperando i miei modelli. Tiberio l’avrebbe “rimessa insieme” e rifatto chissà quali pezzi mancanti come riporta il Vasari.

Fra quei pezzi potrebbe esserci stata la gamba che oggi ancora manca all’opera. Guardandola attentamente noterete sicuramente che laddove dovrebbe esserci l’inizio della gamba, c’è un foro di forma quadrata che potrebbe benissimo essere adoperato per imperniare la parte mancante.

Perché dunque l’opera rimase incompleta nonostante io avessi concesso quella cessione a patto che venisse ultimata?

Ebbene, nel giro di soli tre anni tutti i protagonisti di quella vicenda passarono a miglior vita, me compreso. Nel 1562 il Bandini morì, poi toccò a me nel febbraio del 1564 e l’anno successivo, nel 1655, morì pure Tiberio Calcagni.

Pietà Bandini: the lost leg of Christ and that square pin hole

The Pietà Bandini is missing a leg. The issue is obvious, there is little to discuss about it. In the course of history, perhaps someone had redone that leg or had tried to redo it.

Sit comfortably that this story is long but deserves some of your precious attention.

The Pietà Bandini was originally intended for my burial but the bumpy hard marble sparked with every stroke of the beam. Seized with rage, I gave him a few well-aimed hammer blows and shattered him into different parts.

It is not clear whether the leg jumped off due to my outburst or it was just the accidental jumping off of the leg that moved me to do that act. Let’s leave the benefit of the doubt.

So battered and still not completed, I wanted to donate the work to Antonio del Francese di Castel Durante, my servant.

Tiberio Calcagni at the time was a young sculptor and also my assistant and he reported the presence of this work to the banker Francesco Bandini. Calcagni somehow felt indebted to Bandini because he and Giannotti had introduced him to me and had previously introduced young Calcagni to me so that I could take him with me.

Thus the Pietà ended up in the hands of Bandini although it is not known whether as a gift or, more likely, he paid for it lavishly to Antonio del Francese who had come into possession of it.

Wasserman claims that my collaborator was rewarded with 200 scudi by Bandini and with the subsequent gift of the Pietà Rondanini.

What is certain is that I agreed with that assignment but on one condition: Calcagni would have had to complete it using my models. Tiberius allegedly “put it back together” and remade who knows what missing pieces as reported by Vasari.

Among those pieces there may have been the leg that is still missing from the work today. Looking at it closely you will surely notice that where the beginning of the leg should be, there is a square-shaped hole that could very well be used to pivot the missing part.

Why, then, did the work remain incomplete even though I had granted that assignment on the condition that it be completed? Well, within just three years all the protagonists of that story passed away, myself included. In 1562 Bandini died, then it was my turn in February 1564 and the following year, in 1655, Tiberio Calcagni also died.
