La Porta della Mandorla
Oggi vi porto con me a Firenze alla scoperta della meravigliosa Porta della Mandorla. È una delle più note della basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore ed è l’ultima porta laterale a essere realizzata.
Un capolavoro di Nanni di Banco ma furono tanti altri gli artisti del suo tempo che ci misero mano fra i quali Donatello, Lorenzo d’Ambrogio ma anche Giovanni Tedesco, Bernardo Ciuffagni e Niccolò di Pietro Lamberti. Si pensa che abbia contribuito alla realizzazione di questa opera anche un giovanissimo Luca della Robbia.
La storia della Porta della Mandorla
La Porta della Mandorla fu realizzata in tre differenti momenti. I lavori furono affidati a Giovanni Tedesco nel 1391. Per i sei anni a seguire si mise al lavoro per la realizzazione degli stipiti esterni e interni. Scolpì i profeti e l’architrave con tutte le mensole.
Nel secondo periodo, fra il 1404 e il 1409, venne realizzato l’arco sopra il portale con le fasce a rilievo mentre la terza fase dei lavori, compresa fra il 1414 e il 1422, fu messa in mano di Nanni di Banco. Era un’artista assai apprezzato all’epoca per aver realizzato sculture sia per la chiesa di Orsanmichele che per il duomo stesso.
L’Assunzione della Vergine del timpano
Nanni di Banco si mise al lavoro per creare l’altissimo rilievo triangolare dell’Assunzione della Vergine con figure che sono più grandi delle persone reali. Osservando il rilievo dal basso non si percepiscono le sue dimensioni effettive: vi dico però che la Vergine è alta più di due metri.
La Madonna porge la cintola a San Tommaso in ginocchio mentre dalla parte opposta del rilievo c’è un orso che pare volersi arrampicare su un albero.
La Porta della Mandorla tanto fu apprezzata che anche Vasari ebbe parole di elogio per descriverla nelle Vite ma fece un errore di attribuzione: la affibbiò a Jacopo della Quercia. Visto la notevole somiglianza degli angeli musicanti scolpiti con i fanciulli che Luca della Robbia scolpirà poi per la meravigliosa cantoria di Santa Maria del Fiore, si ipotizza ci possa essere stata anche la sua mano in quest’opera.
Il mosaico dell’Annunciazione
La Porta della Mandorla venne ultimata fa il 1489 e il 1490 con il mosaico dell’Annunciazione realizzato nella lunetta. È opera di David Ghirlandaio coadiuvato dal fratello Domenico Ghirlandaio. Già proprio loro, i fratelli che mi insegnarono i primi rudimenti della pittura quando ancora ero un bimbetto.

The Door of the Almond
Today I take you with me to Florence to discover the marvelous Door of the Almond. It is one of the best known of the basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore and is the last side door to be built.
A masterpiece by Nanni di Banco but there were many other artists of his time who worked with it, including Donatello, Lorenzo d ‘Ambrogio but also Giovanni Tedesco, Bernardo Ciuffagni and Niccolò di Pietro Lamberti. It is thought that a very young Luca della Robbia also contributed to the realization of this work.
The history of the Almond Door
The Almond Door was built in three different moments. The work was entrusted to Giovanni Tedesco in 1391. For the following six years he set to work for the construction of the external and internal jambs. He sculpted the prophets and the architrave with all the shelves.
In the second period, between 1404 and 1409, the arch above the portal was built with the bands in relief while the third phase of the work, between 1414 and 1422, was placed in the hands of Nanni di Banco. He was a highly regarded artist at the time for having made sculptures both for the church of Orsanmichele and for the cathedral itself.
The Assumption of the Virgin of the tympanum
Nanni di Banco set to work to create the very high triangular relief of the Assumption of the Virgin with figures that are larger than real people. Observing the relief from below, its actual dimensions are not perceived: I tell you, however, that the Virgin is more than two meters high.
The Madonna hands her belt to St. Thomas on his knees while on the opposite side of the relief there is a bear that seems to want to climb a tree.
The Porta della Mandorla was so much appreciated that even Vasari had words of praise to describe it in the Lives but he made an attribution error: he entrusted it to Jacopo della Quercia. Given the remarkable similarity of the musician angels sculpted with the children that Luca della Robbia will then sculpt for the wonderful choir of Santa Maria del Fiore, it is hypothesized that his hand may also have been in this work.
The mosaic of the Annunciation
The Porta della Mandorla was completed in 1489 and 1490 with the mosaic of the Annunciation created in the lunette. It is the work of David Ghirlandaio assisted by his brother Domenico Ghirlandaio. Already them, the brothers who taught me the first rudiments of painting when I was still a child.
