Eccomi qua per raccontare il seguito del tour alla scoperta di ciò che Carrara ha da offrire sia a chi la conosce come le sue tasche sia a chi mai ha messo piede in città. Se ancora non avete letto la prima parte, vi consiglio di farlo cliccando QUA.

Andare a Carrara e non visitare le cave è qualcosa di impensabile almeno per me. E’ da lì che arriva il pregiato marmo esportato in tutto il mondo: le sculture, i pavimenti, oggetistica ma anche un gran numero di prodotti che contengono il carbonato di calcio più puro come dentifrici e saponi. Proprio così: il marmo è carbonato di calcio e si presta per essere adoperato nei settori più diversi.

A bordo di un fuoristrada prima e di un altro poi, visto che il primo ha deciso di fermarsi come fa l’asino quando s’impunta, arrivo alla vetta della cava Gioia, al cospetto del David. Non il mio, sia chiaro, ma il grande murales che ha realizzato dal 9 al 15 maggio del 2017 Eduardo Kobra, lo street artist brasiliano di fama internazionale.

Kobra, classe 1976, si è confrontato per la prima volta con una superficie totalmente differente rispetto a quelle che adopera di solito fatte di mattoni e calcestruzzo: il marmo. C’è una curiosità che riguarda da vicino il David che guarda la Luna sconosciuta ai più… nemmeno io ne ero a conoscenza prima che l’accompagnatore me la raccontasse. L’opera non è finita. sembra quasi una citazione involontaria dei Prigioni miei trasferita sul volto del David. Osservate bene la mano e parte del volto: vedete che non sono colorati? Non è stata una scelta dello street artist ma la mancanza di tempo: Kobra aveva l’aereo per Lisbona dove lo attendeva un’altra importante comissione.

Il tempo quando son salito su non era dei migliori. Il cielo sembrava di piombo ma non impediva una bella vista su Carrara dall’altro e sulle cave sottostanti. Prima di riscendere a valle c’è stato un interessate fuori programma con una visita alle cave della coperativa: immense. Ai miei tempi una cosa del genere era inimmaginabile visto i tempi e le modalità adoperate per l’estrazione.

Vero è che siamo a maggio ma c’era un freschetto lassù. Sarà quello che m’ha fatto venir fame? Dopo una mangiata di tordelli alla carrarina, un biccher di vino rigorosamente rosso e la torta di riso che qui è una vera specialità, sono stato accompagnato in giro per il centro storico. Piazze, stradine, duomo e il murales della partigiana Francesca Rolla in Piazza delle Erbe, realizzato dal gruppo Orticanoodles. Francesca Rolla (1915-2010) è stata una donna simbolo della Resistenza. Il 7 luglio del 1944 fu l’animatrice della rivolta che permise di salvare Carrara dallo sgombero forzato. Anche se si leggono un po’ male, al lato del volto c’è scritto “Non abbandonare la città”. L’invito di allora che vale ancora oggi.

Ma il il centro di Carrara almeno per il momento devo davvero abbandonarlo. M’aspetta una visita al Carmi, il Museo dedicato a me e a Carrara inaugurato lo scorso giugno, situato all’interno del Parco della Padula.

la parte che preferisco è qulla dei gessi e in particolare la mostra temporanea dei Maestri Studenti in Viaggio Verso Roma. Bella l’idea di poterci girare attorno per vederli a tutto tondo.

La mia due giorni in collaborazione con White Carrara Downtown e La Internazionale Marmo Macchine termina qua ma è un arrivederci. Sicuramente tornerò in terra di Carrara nel periodo compreso tra il 1° e il 9 giugno 2019 in occasione della fiera diffusa White Carrara Downtown. Carrara non è solo marmo e cave ma propone al visitatore un’ampia scelta di esperienze e itinerari capaci di soddisfare le esigenze e i gusti di tutti.

Carrara and its wonders: part II

Here I am to tell the rest of the tour to discover what Carrara has to offer both to those who know it as its pockets and to those who have never been there. If you haven’t read the first part yet, I suggest you do it by clicking HERE.

Going to Carrara and not visiting the quarries is something unthinkable for me at least. This is where the prized marble exported all over the world arrives: sculptures, floors, objects but also a large number of products that contain the purest calcium carbonate such as toothpastes and soaps. That’s right: marble is calcium carbonate and lends itself to being used in the most diverse sectors.

On board an off-road vehicle first and then another, as the former decided to stop as the donkey does when he stumbles, arriving at the summit of the Gioia quarry, in front of the David. Not mine, be it clear, but the great mural that realized Eduardo Kobra, the Brazilian street artist of international renown, from 9 to 15 May 2017.

Kobra, born in 1976, was confronted for the first time with a totally different surface than the ones it usually uses made of bricks and concrete: marble. There is a curiosity that closely concerns the David who looks at the Moon that few people know … I didn’t even know about it before the guide told it to me. The work is not over. it almost seems like an involuntary citation of my Prisons transferred to the face of David. Take a good look at the hand and part of the face: do you see that they are not colored? It was not a choice of the street artist but the lack of time: Kobra had the plane to Lisbon where another important commission was waiting for him.

The sky looked like lead but did not prevent a beautiful view of Carrara from the other and the quarries below. Before returning to the valley there was an unplanned person interested in a visit to the quarries of the cooperative: huge. In my day such a thing was unimaginable given the times and the methods used for the extraction.

Even though we are already in May there was a lot of chill up there. Will that be what made me hungry? After a meal of carrarina tordelli, a strictly red wine biccher and the rice cake which is a real specialty here, I was accompanied around the historic center. Squares, narrow streets, cathedral and the murals of the partisan Francesca Rolla in Piazza delle Erbe, created by the Orticanoodles group. Francesca Rolla (1915-2010) was a woman symbol of the Resistance. On 7 July 1944 he was the animator of the revolt that allowed Carrara to be saved from forced eviction. Even if they read a little badly, on the side of the face there is written “Don’t leave the city”. The invitation of that time is still valid today.

But the center of Carrara at least for the moment I really have to abandon it. A visit to the Carmi, the Museum dedicated to me and to Carrara opened last June, is waiting for me, located inside the Padula Park.

My favorite part is the plaster casts and in particular the temporary exhibition of the Master Students Traveling to Rome. Beautiful the idea of ​​being able to turn around to see them in the round.

My two days in collaboration with White Carrara Downtown and the International Marble Machines ends here but it’s a goodbye. I will certainly return to Carrara in the period between 1 and 9 June 2019 on the occasion of the White Carrara Downtown fair. Carrara is not just marble and quarries but offers the visitor a wide choice of experiences and itineraries capable of satisfying everyone’s needs and tastes.
