Il primo a rimanere sconvolto dalla visione del Giudizio Universale fu papa Paolo III.

Le cronache dell’epoca narrano che nel momento in cui il Giudizio venne svelato al pubblico, durante le solenni celebrazioni della vigilia di Ognissanti del 1541, il pontefice si prostrò dinnanzi all’opera. A mani giunte iniziò a pregare per il perdono dei propri peccati nell’ultimo giorno del mondo.

Alle opere che portano alla commozione ho preferito dar vita a quelle che sconvolgono i sensi.

Il modo in cui raffigurai l’ira di Cristo, gli sguardi sconvolti dei dannati e la speranza dei risorti, fecero inginocchiare il papa. Fu toccato nel profondo dell’animo solo come le persone sensibili possono esserlo.

L’effetto non fu il medesimo per tutti i presenti all’inaugurazione ma d’altro canto c’è chi si soffermò a guardar le chiappe e basta. Povere genti dai cuori aridi e con maliziosi pensieri che non riescono a vedere al di là del proprio io.

Il Cristo mio però non solo condanna alla dannazione eterna. Osservate bene l’espressione che ha sul volto: niente è frutto del caso. Volge lo sguardo verso di loro abbassando leggermente il capo e pare abbia per loro un moto di compassione. E’ la pena infinita di Dio che decreta il castigo eterno per i suoi figli che ha messo al mondo e che tanto ha amato.

He looks at them, lowering his head slightly and seems to have a movement of compassion for them. It is the infinite punishment of God who decrees the eternal punishment for his children whom he brought into the world and whom he loved so much.
