La Guardia Svizzera Pontificia è l’unico corpo armato svizzero ancora operativo ed è a servizio del Papa dal lontano 22 gennaio del 1506. Sono in molti quelli che scrivono e sostengono che le divise della Guardia siano il frutto di una mia idea ma, in realtà, le cose non stanno proprio così.

Quando le prime guardie iniziarono ad affiancare il pontefice nel lontano 1506, avevano un abbigliamento assai diverso da quello che sfoggiano oggi. Non è dato sapere come fossero vestiti esattamente ma è ipotizzabile pensare che indossassero capi simili agli altri soldati dell’epoca.

Alle origini, la Guardia Svizzera non sfoggiava un’uniforme ben definita. In un documento redatto all’epoca di Giulio II della Rovere, venne annotato che, le spese dei loro vestiti, venivano regolarmente sostenute dal papato.

Difendevano il loro protetto con spade e alabarde proteggendo la parte alta del busto con una corazza metallica.

Nell’affresco della Cacciata di Eliodoro, Raffaello raffigurò alcuni soldati della Guardia Svizzera al seguito di papa Giulio II della Rovere. Si vedono bene le braghe larghe fino al ginocchio e il farsetto che lambisce i fianchi.

Per realizzare questi capi si adoperava la lana e papa Clemente IX, nella seconda metà del Seicento, stabilì che quei tessuti venissero acquistati esclusivamente solo presso il conservatorio delle Ragazze Mendicanti, dove si lavorava proprio la lana.

I colori attuali delle divise vennero scelti da papa Leone X de’ Medici: rosso, giallo e blu ovvero i tre colori della sua casata. Le uniformi nel corso dei secoli hanno subito numerose variazioni fino ad arrivare a quelle che oggi tutti conoscono.

La paternità delle divise viene sovente affibbiata a me ma mai mi feci carico di disegnare quei capi. Le divise attuali sono quasi più riconducibili a Raffaello come idea che con i suoi affreschi riuscì a influenzare fortemente la moda del tempo.

The uniforms of the Swiss Guard

The Pontifical Swiss Guard is the only Swiss armed body still operational and is at the service of the Pope since 22nd January 1506. Many have written and continue to claim that the Guard uniforms are the result of my idea but, in reality , things are not like that.

When the first guards began to support the Pope in the distant 1506, they had a very different attire from what they show today. We do not know how they were dressed exactly but it is conceivable to think that they wore similar garments to the other soldiers of the time. At its origins, the Swiss Guard did not have a well-defined uniform. In a document written at the time of Julius II della Rovere, it was noted that the expenses of their clothes were regularly supported by the papacy. Defended their protected with swords and halberds protecting the upper part of the bust with a metal armor.

In the fresco of Eliodoro’s Expulsion, Raphael painted some soldiers of the Swiss Guard following Pope Julius II della Rovere. The wide pants up to the knee and the bodice that touches the hips are clearly visible. In order to make these garments, wool was used and Pope Clement IX, in the second half of the seventeenth century, established that the fabrics were purchased exclusively at the Conservatory of the Mendicanti Girls, where the wool was worked.

The current colors of the uniforms were chosen by Pope Leo X de ‘Medici: red, yellow and blue or the three colors of his house. The uniforms over the centuries have undergone numerous changes up to what we all know today.

The paternity of the uniforms is often given to me but probably I never took the charge of drawing those items. The current uniforms are almost more traceable to Raphael who with his frescoes was able to strongly influence the fashion of the time.
