Uno degli appuntamenti culturali più attesi del 2026 porterà a Roma il genio inquieto e rivoluzionario di Jacopo Pontormo.

Dall’8 ottobre 2026 al 7 febbraio 2027 le Scuderie del Quirinale ospiteranno una grande mostra monografica dedicata al maestro del Manierismo, un evento destinato ad attirare studiosi, appassionati d’arte e visitatori da tutto il mondo.

L’esposizione, annunciata dal direttore delle Scuderie del Quirinale Matteo Lanfranconi, rappresenta uno dei progetti più ambiziosi del panorama espositivo italiano dei prossimi anni. Tra i capolavori già confermati spicca la celebre Visitazione, considerata una delle opere più emozionanti e innovative dell’intera produzione del Pontormo.

La Visitazione lascia la Toscana per Roma

A confermare il trasferimento dell’opera è stato il vescovo di Pistoia, Fausto Tardelli. La richiesta è arrivata direttamente dalle Scuderie del Quirinale e la Diocesi ha accolto con favore la proposta, riconoscendo il prestigio dell’istituzione romana e l’importanza scientifica della mostra.

Al termine dell’esposizione, la Visitazione farà ritorno nella chiesa dei Santi Michele e Francesco a Carmignano o così è quanto afferma Tardelli, attualmente interessata da un importante progetto di valorizzazione e restauro.

“Considerando il prestigio del luogo in cui andrà e la rilevanza della mostra dedicata a Pontormo, abbiamo accettato la proposta”, ha spiegato il vescovo.

Un capolavoro assoluto del Rinascimento italiano

Realizzata tra il 1528 e il 1530, la Visitazione di Carmignano è una delle immagini più iconiche della storia dell’arte italiana. Le quattro figure femminili sembrano sospese in una dimensione irreale, immerse in una luce delicata e avvolte da colori straordinariamente moderni.

L’opera rappresenta l’incontro tra Maria ed Elisabetta narrato nel Vangelo di Luca, ma nelle mani di Pontormo il soggetto religioso diventa una composizione visionaria, capace di rompere gli schemi dell’arte rinascimentale tradizionale.

I volti intensi, le pose eleganti e i celebri toni rosa, azzurri e aranciati hanno reso la Visitazione uno dei simboli assoluti del Manierismo europeo.

Dalla Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano alle Scuderie del Quirinale

Dal settembre 2024 la Visitazione è conservata nella Sala del Fregio della Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano durante i lavori di restauro della chiesa di Carmignano. Nella stessa struttura trovano posto anche le cinque pale minori provenienti dall’edificio religioso. Al momento è in trasferta al Metropolitan Museum di New York.

La trasferta romana rappresenta anche un’opportunità concreta per il futuro dell’opera. Le risorse economiche generate dal prestito contribuiranno infatti alla realizzazione di un nuovo sistema illuminotecnico destinato a valorizzare la Visitazione e l’intero complesso delle pale d’altare una volta completati i lavori di recupero.

Secondo i responsabili del progetto, il nuovo allestimento permetterà finalmente una lettura più efficace dei dettagli pittorici e della straordinaria gamma cromatica ideata dal maestro toscano.

One of the most anticipated cultural events of 2026 will bring the restless and revolutionary genius of Jacopo Pontormo to Rome.

From October 8, 2026, to February 7, 2027, the Scuderie del Quirinale will host a major monographic exhibition dedicated to the master of Mannerism, an event destined to attract scholars, art enthusiasts, and visitors from around the world.

The exhibition, announced by the director of the Scuderie del Quirinale, Matteo Lanfranconi, represents one of the most ambitious projects in the Italian exhibition landscape in the coming years. Among the masterpieces already confirmed, the celebrated Visitation stands out, considered one of the most moving and innovative works of Pontormo’s entire oeuvre.

The Visitation leaves Tuscany for Rome

The transfer of the work was confirmed by the Bishop of Pistoia, Fausto Tardelli. The request came directly from the Scuderie del Quirinale, and the Diocese welcomed the proposal, recognizing the prestige of the Roman institution and the scientific importance of the exhibition.

At the end of the exhibition, the Visitation will return to the church of Saints Michael and Francis in Carmignano, or so Tardelli states, which is currently undergoing a major enhancement and restoration project.

“Considering the prestige of the location where it will be housed and the importance of the exhibition dedicated to Pontormo, we accepted the proposal,” the bishop explained.

An absolute masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance

Created between 1528 and 1530, the Carmignano Visitation is one of the most iconic images in the history of Italian art. The four female figures seem suspended in an unreal dimension, bathed in a delicate light and enveloped in extraordinarily modern colors.

The work depicts the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth narrated in the Gospel of Luke, but in Pontormo’s hands, the religious subject becomes a visionary composition, capable of breaking the mold of traditional Renaissance art.

The intense faces, elegant poses, and celebrated pink, blue, and orange tones have made the Visitation one of the absolute symbols of European Mannerism.

From the Medici Villa of Poggio a Caiano to the Scuderie del Quirinale

Since September 2024, the Visitation has been housed in the Hall of the Frieze of the Medici Villa of Poggio a Caiano during the restoration of the church of Carmignano. The five smaller altarpieces from the religious building are also housed in the same building. It is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The visit to Rome also represents a concrete opportunity for the work’s future. The financial resources generated by the loan will contribute to the creation of a new lighting system designed to enhance the Visitation and the entire complex of altarpieces once the restoration work is completed.

According to the project managers, the new display will finally allow for a more effective interpretation of the pictorial details and the extraordinary color palette conceived by the Tuscan master.
