Era il 27 Agosto del 1498 quando venne stipulato ufficialmente il contratto per la realizzazione della Pietà Vaticana.

In realtà quel lavoro mi era già stato affidato da tempo tanto che il cardinale committente Jean de Bilhéres de Lagraulas, cardinale di San Dionigi nonché ambasciatore del re di Francia presso il papa Alessandro VI al secolo Rodrigo Borgia, aveva già versato sul mio conto un anticipo di 133 e 1/3 di fiorini di Reno affinché andassi a cercarmi a Carrara i marmi di cui necessitavo.

Sia noto et manifesto a chi legerà la presente scripta, come el reverendissimo cardinal di San dionisio si è convenuto con mastro Michelangelo statuario fiorentino, che lo dicto maestro debia far una Petà di marmo a sue spese, ciò è una Vergine Maria vestita, con Christo morto in braccio, grande quanto sia vno homo iusto, per prezo di ducati quattrocento cinquanta d’oro papali, in termino di uno anno dal dì della principiata opera.

Et lo dicto reverendissimo Cardinale promette farli lo pagamento in questo modo, ciò è: Imprimis promette darli ducati centocinquanta d’oro in oro papali, innanti che comenzi l’opera: et da poi principiata l’opera promette ogni quattro mesi darli ducati centi simili al dicto Michelangelo, in modo che li dicti quatro cento cinquanta ducati d’oro in oro papali siano finiti di pagarli in Vno anno, se la dicta opera sarà finita; et se prima sarà finita, che la sua reverendissima Signoria prima sia obligata a pagarlo del tutto. 

Et io Iacobo Gallo prometto al reverendissimo Monsignore che lo dicto Michelangelo farà la dicta opera in fra uno anno et sarà la più bella opera di marmo che sia hoge in Roma, et che Maestro nisuno la faria megliore hoge.

Et si versa vice prometto al ditto Michelangelo che lo reverendissimo Cardinale la farà lo pagamento secundo che de sopra è scripto.

Et a fede io Iacobo Gallo ho facta la presente di mia propria mano, anno, mese et dì sopradito. Intendendosi per questa scripta esser cassa et annullata ogni altra scripta di mano mia, o vero di mano del dicto Michelangelo, et questa solo habia effecto. 

Hane dati il dicto reverendissimo Cardinale a me Iacobo più tempo fa ducati cento d’oro in oro di cCamera et a dì dicto ducati cinquanta d’oro in oro papali. Joannes, Cardinalis S. Dyonisis.

Quello che il Galli scrisse nero su bianco nel contratto io lo mantenni: scolpii l’opera più bella che nessuno in quel momento sarebbe stato capace di fare a Roma.

Peccato però che il committente Lagraulas non ebbe modo di vedere ultimata la scultura, inaugurata alla vigilia del Giubileo del 1500.

Morì infatti nell’agosto del 1499 ma son sicuro che oltre la vita terrena abbia dato una sbirciata sulla terra per vedere questo capolavoro che ancora oggi tutto il mondo ammira.

August 27, 1498: The Contract for the Vatican Pietà was Signed

It was August 27, 1498, when the contract for the Vatican Pietà was officially signed.

In reality, the work had already been entrusted to me for some time, so much so that the commissioning cardinal, Jean de Bilhéres de Lagraulas, Cardinal of San Denis and ambassador of the King of France to Pope Alexander VI (born Rodrigo Borgia), had already deposited an advance of 133.5 Rhine florins into my account so that I could go and find the marble I needed in Carrara.

Let it be known and manifest to whoever reads this document that the Most Reverend Cardinal of San Dionisio has agreed with Master Michelangelo, Florentine sculptor, that the said master shall make a marble statue at his own expense, that is, a vested Virgin Mary with the dead Christ in her arms, as large as a just man, for the price of four hundred and fifty papal gold ducats, within one year from the date of the work’s commencement.

And the said Most Reverend Cardinal promises to make payment to him in this manner, namely: Imprimatur promises to give him one hundred and fifty gold ducats in papal gold before the work begins; and from the time the work begins, he promises to give him one hundred ducats every four months similar to the said Michelangelo, so that the said four hundred and fifty gold ducats in papal gold will be paid in one year, if the said work is finished; and if it is finished first, that His Most Reverend Lordship will first be obligated to pay him in full.

And I, Iacobo Gallo, promise the Most Reverend Monsignor that the said Michelangelo will complete the said work within one year and it will be the most beautiful marble work in Rome today, and that no Master could do it better today.

And if I pay in lieu, I promise to the said Michelangelo that the Most Reverend Cardinal will make the payment as written above.

And in witness thereof, I, Jacobus Gallus, have executed this present document with my own hand, on the year, month, and day above. It is understood that this document cancels and annuls any other document written by me, or by the said Michelangelo, and this document alone shall have effect.

The said Most Reverend Cardinal has given me Jacobus some time ago one hundred gold ducats in Chamber gold, and on the said day fifty gold ducats in Papal gold. John, Cardinalis S. Dyonisis.

What Galli wrote in black and white in the contract, I kept: I sculpted the most beautiful work that no one in Rome at that time would have been capable of creating.

It’s a shame, however, that the patron, Lagraulas, never saw the sculpture completed, inaugurated on the eve of the Jubilee of 1500. He died in August 1499, but I’m sure that beyond his earthly life, he took a peek back to earth to see this masterpiece that the whole world still admires today.
