La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Latona con i suoi figli dello scultore statunitense William Henry Rinehart, realizzata nel 1874.

Rinehart, nato nel Maryland, visse a lungo a Roma e perfezionò la sua maestria nello scolpire proprio nella Città Eterna, studiando dal vero le opere dei grandi maestri del passato e dei suoi contemporanei italiani.

Lo scultore volle dar corpo a Latona dea delle tenebre, seduta accanto ad Apollo e Diana addormentati, i due gemelli che aveva concepito assieme a Giove.

Latona era la dea della mitologia greca legata alla maternità e assieme ai suoi figli, protettrice dei ragazzi.

Secondo quanto narrato da Esiodo, Zeus temendo la gelosia feroce della moglie Era, allontanò la donna prima che potesse dare alla luce i gemelli. Nessuno volle darle ospitalità temendo le terribili ritorsioni di Era così la giovane gravida fu inseguita dal serpente Pitone e vagò attraverso il Mar Egeo.

Finalmente trovò riparo sull’isola di Deldo sulla quale vennero alla luce i figli Artemide e Apollo. Esistono diverse versioni di questa storia mitologica ma pare Rinehart si ispirò proprio a quella raccontata da Esiodo.

La dea guarda con affetto i due bambini mentre dormono beatamente, confortati dalla propria presenza. Apollo diventerà poi il dio della luce e del sole mentre Diana sarà destinata ad assumere le vesti della dea della luna e della caccia.

Il modellato di Rinehart è assai sobrio ma curato nel dettaglio. Basta osservare le ciocche dei capelli di Latona, i suoi sandali ripresi da modelli antichi e agli abiti privi di orpelli ma finemente panneggiati.

Lo scultore Rinehart era particolarmente abile nel riprodurre i bambini, scolpendo le loro sembianze nel marmo. Oltre questo capolavoro, ebbero un grande successo anche due altre opere sue aventi come protagonisti dei fanciulli: i Bambini Addormentati e Roma Lyman.

L’opera Latona e i suoi figli di William Henry Rinehart appartiene al Metropolitan Museum di New York ed è esposta nell’ala dedicata alle opere di artisti statunitensi che comprende oltre 20mila lavori.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Latona with her children by the American sculptor William Henry Rinehart, created in 1874.

Rinehart, born in Maryland, lived for a long time in Rome and perfected his mastery of sculpting right in the Eternal City, studying from life the works of the great masters of the past and his Italian contemporaries.

The sculptor wanted to give life to Latona, goddess of darkness, seated next to the sleeping Apollo and Diana, the twins he had conceived together with Jupiter.

Latona was the goddess of Greek mythology linked to motherhood and together with her children, protector of boys.

According to Hesiod, Zeus fearing the fierce jealousy of her wife Hera of her, sent the woman away before she could give birth to her twins. No one wanted to give her hospitality fearing the terrible retaliation of Hera so the pregnant young woman was chased by the snake Python and wandered through the Aegean Sea.

She finally found shelter on the island of Deldo on which her children Artemis and Apollo were born. There are different versions of this mythological story but it seems Rinehart was inspired by the one told by Hesiod.

The goddess looks affectionately at the two children as they sleep peacefully, comforted by her presence. Apollo will then become the god of light and the sun while Diana will be destined to assume the guise of the goddess of the moon and hunting.

Rinehart’s modeling is very sober but with attention to detail. Just look at the locks of Latona’s hair, her sandals taken from ancient models and the dresses without frills but finely draped.

The sculptor Rinehart was particularly skilled in reproducing children, carving their likenesses in marble. In addition to this masterpiece, two other works by him with children as protagonists were also very successful: the Sleeping Children and Roma Lyman.

The work Latona and her children by William Henry Rinehart belongs to the Metropolitan Museum in New York and is exhibited in the wing dedicated to the works of American artists which includes over 20,000 works.
