Gli arcieri che disegnai in questo foglio sembrano stiano lanciando frecce verso il bersaglio appeso all’erma che è dinnanzi a loro ma son tutti senza arco, meno uno.

L’unica figura attiva che ha un arco in mano ben visibile è quella che compare all’estremità sinistra del foglio, dalla parte opposta dell’erma. Ha un volto barbuto non più giovane e sembra faccia fatica ad armare di freccia l’arco.

La scena ha luogo al di sopra di un terreno roccioso su cui disposi accuratamente figure femminili e maschili che assumono lo stesso identico atteggiamento di quando ci si appresta a scoccare una freccia.

L’obiettivo è lo scudo fissato all’erma. Alcune figure stanno letteralmente volando e nonostante non si vedano archi, ad eccezion fatta di uno, sono presenti le frecce già conficcate sul bersaglio e pure sull’erma. Evidentemente non tutti gli arcieri li dotai di una buona mira.

Nella parete più bassa del disegno, a sinistra, si nota la presenza di due figure a terra: sono bambini che soffiano sul fuoco per rinvigorirlo. Invece dalla parte opposta in primo piano, si vede un Cupido alato che sta dormendo mentre tiene in grembo l’arco e dinnanzi a sé, appoggiato sul suolo, la faretra con le frecce.

Mentre l’Amore alato dorme non può guidare gli arcieri che sembrano invece animati dalle fiamme della passione. La loro bramosia li guida e li infiamma ma non gli consente di centrare il bersaglio che hanno dinnanzi: senza amore è difficile raggiungere l’obiettivo finale dell’amato.

Sul verso del foglio sono presenti due iscrizioni a penna. La prima riporta che “Andrea QQuaratesi venne quj a di 12 aprile 1530 ed ebbe ducats 10 per man dare a suo padre a Pisa”. Non è una scritta di mia mano ma fa riferimento a uno dei pagamenti che inviai durante l’assedio di Firenze al mi babbo in là con gli anni in quel di Pisa, facendo fare da corriere ad Andrea Quaratesi.

La seconda iscrizione invece riporta: “D. Giulio Clouio copia di Michiel Angelo” ed è redatta da una mano tardo cinquecentesca. Una scritta problematica da interpretare ma apposta forse da chi attribuì per primo a Clovio Il disegno.

Per anni questi foglio era stato attribuito a Clovio e anche nell’inventario fatto pochi giorni prima che morisse, viene citato come “Il Saggittario di Michelangelo fatto da D. Clovio”.

La qualità del disegno, le correzioni, la composizione e il modo in cui è stato adoperata la sanguigna non sono altro che testimonianze della mano mia.

Il disegno rimase nella collezione Farnese fino al Seicento poi se ne perdono e tracce fino a ricomparire fra i capolavori della Royal Collection. Apparteneva a Giorgio III già alla fine del Settecento e si presume lo avesse acquistato mediante i suoi agenti che erano presenti a Roma attorno al 1760.

Bowless archers

The archers that I drew in this sheet seem to be shooting arrows at the target hanging from the herm that is in front of them but they are all without a bow, except one.

The only active figure that has a clearly visible bow in its hand is the one that appears at the left end of the sheet, on the opposite side of the herm. He has a bearded face that is no longer young and it seems he is struggling to arm his bow with an arrow.

The scene takes place above a rocky terrain on which I carefully arranged female and male figures who assume the exact same attitude as when preparing to shoot an arrow.

The objective is the shield attached to the herm. Some figures are literally flying and although no bows are seen, except for one, there are arrows already stuck on the target and also on the herm. Evidently not all archers I gave them good aim.

On the lower wall of the drawing, on the left, we note the presence of two figures on the ground: they are children who are blowing on the fire to reinvigorate it. Instead, on the opposite side in the foreground, we see a winged Cupid who is sleeping while holding the bow in his lap and in front of him, resting on the ground, the quiver with arrows.

While winged Love sleeps he cannot guide the archers who seem instead animated by the flames of passion. However, their greed and the passion that drives them does not allow them to hit the target in front of them: without love it is difficult to reach the final goal of the loved one.

On the back of the sheet there are two pen inscriptions. The first reports that “Andrea QQuaratesi came here on 12 April 1530 and had 10 ducats to send to his father in Pisa”. It is not written by me but refers to one of the payments I sent during the siege of Florence to my aged father in Pisa, having Andrea Quaratesi act as courier.

The second inscription instead reads: “D. Giulio Clouio copy of Michiel Angelo” and is written by a late sixteenth-century hand. A problematic writing to interpret but perhaps on purpose by whoever first attributed the drawing to Clovio.

For years this sheet had been attributed to Clovio and even in the inventory made a few days before he died, it is mentioned as “Michelangelo’s Sagittarius done by D. Clovio”.

The quality of the drawing, the corrections, the composition and the way in which the sanguine was used are nothing but testimonies of my hand.

The drawing remained in the Farnese collection until the seventeenth century, then traces of it were lost until it reappeared among the masterpieces of the Royal Collection. It already belonged to George III at the end of the eighteenth century and it is assumed that he had purchased it through his agents who were present in Rome around 1760.
