Nel corso dei secoli sono diversi gli artisti che mi omaggiarono realizzando ritratti e busti con le mie sembianze. Alcuni sono di mirabile fattura, altri un po’ più dozzinali.

Ci sono dipinti che mi ritraggono in diverse fasi della vita, incisioni e vere e proprie sculture a mezzo busto o a figura intera come quello del Santarelli che decora la Loggia degli Uffizi.

Oltre ai ritratti più noti come quelli di Daniele da Volterra sia disegnati che forgiati nel bronzo assai noti, ce ne sono altri meno celebri ma non per questo meno degni di nota.

Quello che vi propongo oggi è il busto realizzato dallo scultore Pietro Calvi, nato a Milano nel 1833. Volle raffigurami abbigliato con una cappa con un colletto in pelliccia portata sopra una camicia più leggera in cotone o in lino.

Calvi durante il corso della vita ebbe modo di prendere parte a diversi importanti opere milanesi quali la Fabbrica del duomo di Milano e la Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

Studiò l’arte della scultura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera ed era celebre per le sue opere che combinavano il marmo e il bronzo ma per ritrarre me scelse in via esclusiva il marmo.

Nel busto il mio sguardo non è diretto verso lo spettatore ma gira il capo verso sinistra e guarda verso il basso. Per aggiungere potenza allo sguardo, Calvi scavò le pupille come iniziai a fare secoli prima io con gli occhi del David. Da allora in molti hanno seguito l’esempio rendendo gli sguardi delle proprie sculture più vividi.

Questo busto che mi ritrae di Calvi, realizzato nel 1873, appartiene alle collezioni del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes di Buenos Aires, in Argentina.

Furono José Prudencio de Guerrico, Mercedes de Guerrico e María Salomé de Guerrico de Lamarca a donare l’opera al museo, assieme ad altre sculture della scuola francese e italiana. La donazione di Mercedes de Guerrico e María Salomé ha permesso l’ingresso nel museo di oltre 600 pezzi, tra dipinti, sculture, mobili e oggetti.

Non è dato sapere in quale città fosse stato precedentemente acquistato il busto gli eredi di Guerrico ma è ipotizzabile pensare lo avesse comprato a Londra durante le esposizioni effettuate dalla Royal Academy of Art fra il 1872 e il 1882.

My bust sculpted by Calvi in Argentina

Over the centuries there have been several artists who paid homage to me by creating portraits and busts with my likeness. Some are of admirable workmanship, others a little more cheesy.

There are paintings that portray me in different stages of life, engravings and actual half-bust or full-length sculptures like the one by Santarelli that decorates the Loggia degli Uffizi.

In addition to the best-known portraits such as those of Daniele da Volterra both drawn and forged in bronze, there are others that are less famous but no less worthy of note.

What I offer you today is the bust made by the sculptor Pietro Calvi, born in Milan in 1833. He wanted to depict me dressed in a cape with a fur collar worn over a lighter shirt in cotton or linen.

During his life Calvi had the opportunity to take part in several important Milanese works such as the Fabbrica del Duomo in Milan and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

He studied the art of sculpture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and was famous for his works that combined marble and bronze but to portray me he exclusively chose marble.

In the bust my gaze is not directed towards the viewer but turns my head to the left and looks down. To add power to the gaze, Calvi hollowed out the pupils as I began to do centuries before with the eyes of David. Since then many have followed suit by making the looks of their sculptures more vivid.

This bust of me by Calvi, made in 1873, belongs to the collections of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It was José Prudencio de Guerrico, Mercedes de Guerrico and María Salomé de Guerrico de Lamarca who donated the work to the museum, together with other sculptures from the French and Italian schools. The donation of Mercedes de Guerrico and María Salomé allowed the entry into the museum of over 600 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, furniture and objects.

It is not known in which city the bust had previously been purchased by Guerrico’s heirs but it is conceivable that he bought it in London during the exhibitions held by the Royal Academy of Art between 1872 and 1882.
