Gli uomini illustri nel loggiato degli Uffizi
Spesso stando in coda per entrare nella Galleria degli Uffizi, fra un piede calpestato e uno strattone, vien fatto di guardarsi attorno per ingannare l’attesa. Dopotutto è un bel guardare: le nicchie del loggiato sono arricchite con le sculture degli uomini illustri che hanno reso Firenze quello che tutt’oggi il mondo ammira.
Sapete, già ai tempi della costruzione degli Uffizi c’era già un progetto per la decorazione del loggiato per renderlo una sorta di nuovo Foro di Augusto.
Per il volere di Cosimo I, le 28 nicchie avrebbero dovuto essere decorate con altrettanti “fiorentini che fussero stati chiari e illustri nelle armi, nelle lettere e nei governi civili”.
Con il passare del tempo l’intenzione iniziale venne meno fino all’Ottocento.
L’editore Vincenzo Batelli riprese quell’antica idea per trasformarla in realtà. Il suo intento era quello di celebrare il genio italico omaggiando personaggi illustri del passato con i loro ritratti scultorei a figura intera. C’era però bisogno di palanche e nemmeno poche così l’editore iniziò a finanziare il progetto con una sottoscrizione pubblica. Vennero racimolati denari con numerose iniziative fra le quali anche tombolate aperte a tutti. La realizzazione delle sculture venne affidata nelle mani di scultori già affermati. Una volta terminata la serie nel 1856, fu donata al Granducato.
La mia scultura la realizzò Emilio Santarelli nel 1842. M’abbligliò con una ricca veste damascata e, siccome pensava potessi aver freddo lì fuori all’addiaccio durante l’inverno, mi mise anche un bel pastrano lungo fino alle caviglie. La barba biforcuta, lo sguardo pensieroso rivolto verso il basso con la mano destra in vita e l’altra al centro del petto: si, quello son proprio io. Ecco, magari me vestivo più modestamente ma comunque così faccio proprio figura.
Degna di nota è anche la molto fotografata scultura di Leonardo da Vinci del Pampaloni perché fu la prima scultura celebrativa di Leonardo esposta in città. Guardando verso le nicchie scoprirete di camminare al di sotto di Lorenzo il Magnifico, Donatello, Giotto, Galileo, Vespucci e molti altri ancora. Vale la pena guardare con attenzione Machiavelli scolpito dal Bartolini, già molto noto e apprezzato a metà Ottocento.

The illustrious men in the Uffizi gallery
Standing in line to enter the Uffizi Gallery, between a trampled foot and a tug, it is made to look around to deceive the wait. After all, it is a beautiful sight: the niches of the loggia are enriched with the sculptures of the illustrious men who have made Florence what the world admires today.
You know, already at the time of the construction of the Uffizi there was already a project for the decoration of the loggia to make it a sort of new Forum of Augustus. By the will of Cosimo I, the 28 niches should have been decorated with as many “Florentines who were illustrious in arms, letters and civil governments”.
With the passage of time the initial intention was less until the nineteenth century. The publisher Vincenzo Batelli took up that old idea to turn it into reality. His intent was to celebrate the Italian genius by paying homage to illustrious figures from the past with their full-length sculptural portraits. But there was need for palanche and not even a few so the publisher began to finance the project with a public subscription. Money was collected with numerous initiatives including bingo open to all. The realization of the sculptures was entrusted into the hands of already established sculptors. Once the series ended in 1856, it was donated to the Grand Duchy.
My sculpture created Emilio Santarelli in 1842. She gave me a rich damask dress and, as she thought I might have been cold out there during the winter, she also put on a long coat down to my ankles. The forked beard, the thoughtful look turned down with the right hand at the waist and the other at the center of the chest: yes, that’s really me. Here, maybe I dressed more modestly but still so I look really nice.
Also worthy of note is the very photographed sculpture by Leonardo da Vinci of Pampaloni because it was the first celebratory sculpture of Leonardo exhibited in the city. Looking towards the niches you will discover walking under Lorenzo the Magnificent, Donatello, Giotto, Galileo, Vespucci and many others. It is worth looking carefully at Machiavelli sculpted by Bartolini, already well known and appreciated in the mid-nineteenth century.
