La Scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il l’Angelo con il Leone, opera scolpita da Michele Auteri Pomar per il cenotafio di Giuseppe la Farina, ubicato nel primo chiostro della Basilica di Santa Croce a Firenze.

Auteri Pomar era nato a Palermo da Salvatore Auteri e Rosalia Pomar. Non fu un figlio d’arte ma cominciò a studiare scultura da adulto. Suo padre, come la mamma mia, morì quando aveva solo sei anni e così lui con la madre lasciarono la città natale nel 1850 e arrivarono a Firenze.

Lì li aspettava Beltrani, un esule che divenne un po’ il secondo padre di Autieri Pomar facendosi carico della sua istruzione.

Dopo diverse vicissitudini, lui che mai aveva pensato di poter diventare un artista, conobbe lo scultore Tito Sarocchi a Siena.

Fu proprio il Sarocchi a convincerlo a prendere in mano martello e scalpello. Aveva 28 anni allora e senza perdersi d’animo, nonostante in molti lo sconsigliarono, iniziò a studiare sul serio questa raffinata arte.

Prima seguì le lezioni di Pio Fedi ma dopo poco abbandonò preferendo lo scultore Pazzi con il quale ebbe modo di stringere un’intensa amicizia.

Non erano pochi quelli che additavano Autieri come pazzo: cominciare un nuovo mestiere così complicato troppo in là con gli anni, lo avrebbe portato alla rovina.

Dovettero però presto ricredersi quando proprio a lui venne affidata la realizzazione del cenotafio di Giuseppe La Farina, fondatore della società nazionale dedicata all’unità d’Italia.

Dupré lodò pubblicamente la grande opera di Autieri Pomar ma l’artista che ancora non era soddisfatto dell’opera sua, si impegnò ancora di più negli anni a seguire per migliorarsi continuamente.

Il gruppo scultoreo del cenotafio ha un’iconografia assai complessa e fu spiegata dall’artista nell’articolo pubblicato sull’Arte in Italia nel quale presentava il suo progetto. In alto al centro si vede l’Angelo d’Italia seduto sopra un leone, simbolo della forza, della generosità e del coraggio che addita mestamente la tomba del defunto.

Lo scudo raffigura invece le sette provincie italiane col motto “dall’Alpi all’Etna” mentre sulla lama della spada è scritta la parola Libertà.

Ai piedi del leone, sopra le spighe di grano, le foglie di alloro e le foglie di quercia, furono posizionate le tre opere principali di Farina e il Giornale d’Alba.

La figura posta a destra del gruppo è l’allegoria dell’anno 1848 mentre quella di sinistra rappresenta il 1860.

Sotto il gruppo scultoreo, al centro, si legge – A GIUSEPPE LA FARINA/ MESSINESE/ AMÒ IL VERO GLI UOMINI LA PATRIA/ PATÌ DOLORI DISINGANNI ESILI/ OPERÒ CON FEDE COSTANTE ALLE SORTI/ NUOVE D’ITALIA/COMBATTENDO COL BRACCIO E COLL’INGEGNO/ SOLDATO POETA STORICO/ SOSTEGNO DELL’ITALICA GLORIA/ MORIVA IL 5 SETTEMBRE 1863 DI ANNI 47/ ALLE VEGNENTI GENERAZIONI ESEMPIO IMITABILE -.

La prossima volta che andrete a visitare il complesso di Santa Croce a Firenze, oltre a venirmi a fare visita dinnanzi alla tomba mia, cercate questo capolavoro di Autieri Pomar e soffermatevi a osservare i suoi dettagli.

Sculpture of the day: The Angel with the Lion by Autieri Pomar

The Sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Angel with the Lion, a work sculpted by Michele Auteri Pomar for the cenotaph of Giuseppe la Farina, located in the first cloister of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence.

Auteri Pomar was born in Palermo to Salvatore Auteri and Rosalia Pomar. He was not a son of an artist but began to study sculpture as an adult. His father, like my mother, died when he was only six years old and so he and his mother left their hometown in 1850 and arrived in Florence.

There Beltrani awaited them, an exile who became a bit the second father of Autieri Pomar by taking charge of his education.

After various vicissitudes, he who had never thought of becoming an artist, met the sculptor Tito Sarocchi in Siena.

It was Sarocchi himself who convinced him to pick up a hammer and chisel. He was 28 years old then and without losing heart, despite many discouraging him, he began to seriously study this refined art.

First he followed the lessons of Pio Fedi but after a while he abandoned preferring the sculptor Pazzi with whom he was able to make an intense friendship.

There were not a few who pointed to Autieri as crazy: starting a new job so complicated too late in the years would have brought him to ruin.

However, they soon had to change their minds when he was entrusted with the construction of the cenotaph of Giuseppe La Farina, founder of the national society dedicated to the unification of Italy.

Dupré publicly praised the great work of Autieri Pomar but the artist who was still not satisfied with his work, undertook even more in the following years to improve continuously.

The sculptural group of the cenotaph has a very complex iconography and was explained by the artist in the article published in Arte in Italia in which he presented his project. At the top in the center we see the Angel of Italy sitting on a lion, symbol of strength, generosity and courage who sadly points to the tomb of the deceased.

The shield instead depicts the seven Italian provinces with the motto “from the Alps to Etna” while the word Liberty is written on the blade of the sword.

At the feet of the lion, above the ears of wheat, the bay leaves and the oak leaves, the three main works of Farina and the Giornale d’Alba were placed.

The figure on the right of the group is the allegory of the year 1848 while the one on the left represents 1860.

Below the sculptural group, in the centre, we read – TO GIUSEPPE LA FARINA/ MESSINESE/ HE LOVED THE REAL MEN THE COUNTRY/ SUFFERED PAINS DISINGANNIES EXILE/ HE WORKED WITH CONSTANT FAITH IN THE NEW SORTS OF ITALY/FIGHTING WITH THE ARM AND WITH THE INTENT / SOLDIER HISTORICAL POET/ SUPPORT OF ITALIAN GLORY/ DIED ON SEPTEMBER 5, 1863 AGED 47/ TO THE COMING GENERATIONS IMITABLE EXAMPLE -.
