Il papa emerito Benedetto XVI, quando ancora era in carica, volle incontrare gli artisti nella Cappella Sistina.

In quel sabato 21 novembre 2009, ebbe luogo il ritrovo promosso dal Pontifico Consiglio della Cultura in occasione del decennale della Lettera di Giovanni Paolo II agli Artisti, datata 4 aprile 1999

Vi riporto alcuni stralci più significativi del suo discorso memorabile in questa giornata che sarà caratterizzata dai suoi funerali.

Con grande gioia vi accolgo in questo luogo solenne e ricco di arte e di memorie. Rivolgo a tutti e a ciascuno il mio cordiale saluto, e vi ringrazio per aver accolto il mio invito. Con questo incontro desidero esprimere e rinnovare l’amicizia della Chiesa con il mondo dell’arte, un’amicizia consolidata nel tempo, poiché il Cristianesimo, fin dalle sue origini, ha ben compreso il valore delle arti e ne ha utilizzato sapientemente i multiformi linguaggi per comunicare il suo immutabile messaggio di salvezza...

 Il Nostro ministero ha bisogno della vostra collaborazione. Perché, come sapete, il Nostro ministero è quello di predicare e di rendere accessibile e comprensibile, anzi commovente, il mondo dello spirito, dell’invisibile, dell’ineffabile, di Dio. E in questa operazione voi siete maestri. E’ il vostro mestiere, la vostra missione; e la vostra arte è quella di carpire dal cielo dello spirito i suoi tesori e rivestirli di parola, di colori, di forme, di accessibilità

 Non è dunque casuale il nostro ritrovarci proprio in questo luogo, prezioso per la sua architettura e per le sue simboliche dimensioni, ma ancora di più per gli affreschi che lo rendono inconfondibile, ad iniziare dai capolavori di Perugino e Botticelli, Ghirlandaio e Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli ed altri, per giungere alle Storie della Genesi e al Giudizio Universale, opere eccelse di Michelangelo Buonarroti, che qui ha lasciato una delle creazioni più straordinarie di tutta la storia dell’arte.

Qui è anche risuonato spesso il linguaggio universale della musica, grazie al genio di grandi musicisti, che hanno posto la loro arte al servizio della liturgia, aiutando l’anima ad elevarsi a Dio. Al tempo stesso, la Cappella Sistina è uno scrigno singolare di memorie, giacché costituisce lo scenario, solenne ed austero, di eventi che segnano la storia della Chiesa e dell’umanità. Qui, come sapete, il Collegio dei Cardinali elegge il Papa; qui ho vissuto anch’io, con trepidazione e assoluta fiducia nel Signore, il momento indimenticabile della mia elezione a Successore dell’apostolo Pietro.

Cari amici, lasciamo che questi affreschi ci parlino oggi, attirandoci verso la méta ultima della storia umana.

Il Giudizio Universale, che campeggia alle mie spalle, ricorda che la storia dell’umanità è movimento ed ascensione, è inesausta tensione verso la pienezza, verso la felicità ultima, verso un orizzonte che sempre eccede il presente mentre lo attraversa. Nella sua drammaticità, però, questo affresco pone davanti ai nostri occhi anche il pericolo della caduta definitiva dell’uomo, minaccia che incombe sull’umanità quando si lascia sedurre dalle forze del male.

L’affresco lancia perciò un forte grido profetico contro il male; contro ogni forma di ingiustizia. Ma per i credenti il Cristo risorto è la Via, la Verità e la Vita. Per chi fedelmente lo segue è la Porta che introduce in quel “faccia a faccia”, in quella visione di Dio da cui scaturisce senza più limitazioni la felicità piena e definitiva. Michelangelo offre così alla nostra visione l’Alfa e l’Omega, il Principio e la Fine della storia, e ci invita a percorrere con gioia, coraggio e speranza l’itinerario della vita. La drammatica bellezza della pittura michelangiolesca, con i suoi colori e le sue forme, si fa dunque annuncio di speranza, invito potente ad elevare lo sguardo verso l’orizzonte ultimo.

Il momento attuale è purtroppo segnato, oltre che da fenomeni negativi a livello sociale ed economico, anche da un affievolirsi della speranza, da una certa sfiducia nelle relazioni umane, per cui crescono i segni di rassegnazione, di aggressività, di disperazione.

Il mondo in cui viviamo, poi, rischia di cambiare il suo volto a causa dell’opera non sempre saggia dell’uomo il quale, anziché coltivarne la bellezza, sfrutta senza coscienza le risorse del pianeta a vantaggio di pochi e non di rado ne sfregia le meraviglie naturali.

Che cosa può ridare entusiasmo e fiducia, che cosa può incoraggiare l’animo umano a ritrovare il cammino, ad alzare lo sguardo sull’orizzonte, a sognare una vita degna della sua vocazione se non la bellezza? Voi sapete bene, cari artisti, che l’esperienza del bello, del bello autentico, non effimero né superficiale, non è qualcosa di accessorio o di secondario nella ricerca del senso e della felicità, perché tale esperienza non allontana dalla realtà, ma, al contrario, porta ad un confronto serrato con il vissuto quotidiano, per liberarlo dall’oscurità e trasfigurarlo, per renderlo luminoso, bello.

Troppo spesso, però, la bellezza che viene propagandata è illusoria e mendace, superficiale e abbagliante fino allo stordimento e, invece di far uscire gli uomini da sé e aprirli ad orizzonti di vera libertà attirandoli verso l’alto, li imprigiona in se stessi e li rende ancor più schiavi, privi di speranza e di gioia.

Si tratta di una seducente ma ipocrita bellezza, che ridesta la brama, la volontà di potere, di possesso, di sopraffazione sull’altro e che si trasforma, ben presto, nel suo contrario, assumendo i volti dell’oscenità, della trasgressione o della provocazione fine a se stessa.

L’autentica bellezza, invece, schiude il cuore umano alla nostalgia, al desiderio profondo di conoscere, di amare, di andare verso l’Altro, verso l’Oltre da sé. Se accettiamo che la bellezza ci tocchi intimamente, ci ferisca, ci apra gli occhi, allora riscopriamo la gioia della visione, della capacità di cogliere il senso profondo del nostro esistere, il Mistero di cui siamo parte e da cui possiamo attingere la pienezza, la felicità, la passione dell’impegno quotidiano.

Sant’Agostino, cantore innamorato della bellezza, riflettendo sul destino ultimo dell’uomo e quasi commentando ante litteram la scena del Giudizio che avete oggi davanti ai vostri occhi, così scriveva: “Godremo, dunque di una visione, o fratelli, mai contemplata dagli occhi, mai udita dalle orecchie, mai immaginata dalla fantasia: una visione che supera tutte le bellezze terrene, quella dell’oro, dell’argento, dei boschi e dei campi, del mare e del cielo, del sole e della luna, delle stelle e degli angeli; la ragione è questa: che essa è la fonte di ogni altra bellezza”.

Auguro a tutti voi, cari Artisti, di portare nei vostri occhi, nelle vostre mani, nel vostro cuore questa visione, perché vi dia gioia e ispiri sempre le vostre opere belle. Mentre di cuore vi benedico, vi saluto, come già fece Paolo VI, con una sola parola: arrivederci!

“With great joy I welcome you to this solemn place rich in art and memories. I address my cordial greetings to each and every one, and I thank you for having accepted my invitation. With this meeting I wish to express and renew the friendship of the Church with the world of art, a friendship consolidated over time, since Christianity, since its origins, has well understood the value of the arts and has wisely used their multifarious languages to communicate its immutable message of salvation…
Our ministry needs your collaboration. Because, as you know, Our ministry is that of preaching and making the world of the spirit, of the invisible, of the ineffable, of God accessible and understandable, indeed moving. And in this operation you are masters. It is your job, your mission; and your art is to steal its treasures from the heaven of the spirit and cover them with words, colors, shapes, accessibility…

It is therefore no coincidence that we find ourselves in this very place, precious for its architecture and for its symbolic dimensions, but even more for the frescoes that make it unmistakable, starting with the masterpieces of Perugino and Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli and others, to reach the Stories of Genesis and the Last Judgment, excellent works by Michelangelo Buonarroti, who left here one of the most extraordinary creations in the whole history of art.

At the same time, the Sistine Chapel is a unique treasure chest of memories, since it constitutes the solemn and austere scenario of events that mark the history of the Church and of humanity. Here, as you know, the College of Cardinals elects the Pope; here I too experienced, with trepidation and absolute trust in the Lord, the unforgettable moment of my election as Successor of the Apostle Peter…

Dear friends, let these frescoes speak to us today, drawing us towards the ultimate goal of human history.

The Last Judgement, which stands out behind me, reminds us that the history of humanity is movement and ascension, it is an inexhaustible tension towards fullness, towards ultimate happiness, towards a horizon that always exceeds the present as it crosses it. In its dramatic nature, however, this fresco also places before our eyes the danger of man’s definitive fall, a threat that hangs over humanity when it lets itself be seduced by the forces of evil.

The fresco therefore launches a strong prophetic cry against evil; against all forms of injustice. But for believers the risen Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. For those who faithfully follow it, it is the Door that leads into that “face to face”, into that vision of God from which full and definitive happiness flows without limitations. Thus Michelangelo offers to our vision the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End of history, and invites us to travel the itinerary of life with joy, courage and hope. The dramatic beauty of Michelangelo’s painting, with its colors and shapes, thus becomes an announcement of hope, a powerful invitation to raise our gaze towards the ultimate horizon…

Unfortunately, the current moment is marked not only by negative phenomena on a social and economic level, but also by a weakening of hope, by a certain distrust in human relationships, for which the signs of resignation, aggression and desperation are growing.

Furthermore, the world in which we live risks changing its face due to the not always wise work of man who, instead of cultivating its beauty, exploits the planet’s resources without conscience for the benefit of a few and often scars them. the natural wonders.

What can restore enthusiasm and confidence, what can encourage the human soul to find its way again, to lift its gaze to the horizon, to dream of a life worthy of its vocation if not beauty? You know well, dear artists, that the experience of beauty, of authentic beauty, neither ephemeral nor superficial, is not something accessory or secondary in the search for meaning and happiness, because such an experience does not distance one from reality, but, at the on the contrary, it leads to a close confrontation with daily life, to free it from darkness and transfigure it, to make it bright, beautiful…

Too often, however, the beauty that is touted is illusory and mendacious, superficial and dazzlingly dazzling and, instead of making men emerge from themselves and opening them up to horizons of true freedom by drawing them upwards, it imprisons them within themselves and it makes them even more slaves, devoid of hope and joy.

It is a seductive but hypocritical beauty, which reawakens lust, the will to power, possession, oppression of the other and which soon turns into its opposite, assuming the faces of obscenity, transgression or provocation for its own sake.

Authentic beauty, on the other hand, opens the human heart to nostalgia, to the deep desire to know, to love, to go towards the Other, towards the Beyond. If we accept that beauty touches us intimately, wounds us, opens our eyes, then we rediscover the joy of vision, of the ability to grasp the profound meaning of our existence, the Mystery of which we are a part and from which we can draw the fullness, the happiness, the passion of daily commitment…

St. Augustine, singer in love with beauty, reflecting on man’s ultimate destiny and almost commenting ante litteram on the scene of the Judgment that you have before your eyes today, wrote thus: “We will therefore enjoy a vision, brothers, never contemplated by eyes, never heard by the ears, never imagined by the imagination: a vision that surpasses all earthly beauties, that of gold, of silver, of woods and fields, of sea and sky, of sun and moon, of stars and of the angels; the reason is this: that it is the source of all other beauty”.

I wish you all, dear Artists, to carry this vision in your eyes, in your hands, in your heart, so that it may give you joy and always inspire your beautiful works. While I cordially bless you, I greet you, as Paul VI already did, with one word: goodbye!” Pope Benedict XVI
