Il Marforio
Il Marforio è un’imponente scultura risalente al I secolo d.C., situata nel cortile di Palazzo Nuovo ai Musei Capitolini. Nel corso dei secoli non ha mai smesso di dire la sua opinando sull’operato dei vari politici nelle differenti epoche che ha attraversato.
Proprio così: il Marforio è una delle sei sculture parlanti di Roma assieme al celeberrimo Pasquino, alla Madama Lucrezia, il Facchino, l’Abate Luigi e il Babuino.
A partire dal Cinquecento, i romani erano soliti affiggere a queste sculture dei messaggi anonimi contenenti spesso critiche oppure versi satirici contro i governanti del momento. Questi biglietti presero il nome di pasquinate dal nome della scultura parlante più nota e più chiacchierona: il Pasquino.
Cosa raffigura il Marforio?
Sebbene il dibattito non è mai terminato del tutto, è assai probabile che il Marforio rappresenti Oceano. Nel corso dei secoli che ha attraversato è stato visto come Giove, Nettuno e finanche come il Tevere.
Fatto sta che l’opera era già nota nel XII secolo tanto che fu disegnata da Beatricetto che la propose come Oceano semisdraiato fra le rocce, con tanto di mostro marino, delfini e la conchiglia che solleva con la mano destra.
Il luogo del ritrovamento e il nome Marforio
L’opera fu ritrovata nel Foro di Augusto nei pressi del Tempio di Marte Ultore, in quella zona chiamata nel periodo medievale Foro di Marte. Avrebbe assunto così, poco a poco, la deformazione del nome latino Martis Forum, ovvero Marforio.
Esiste anche un’altra ipotesi relativa al suo singolare nome. Sembra che l’opera in passato sia appartenuta alla famiglia Marfoli che abitava nelle vicinanze del Carcere Mamertino, proprio dove si trovava la scultura fino al 1588.
Il Marforio era un’opera particolarmente amata da Giacomo dalla Porta tanto che volle utilizzarla come ornamento per il progetto della fontana di Piazza Colonna. Successivamente papa Sisto V volle farla spostare su Piazza San Marco.
Alla fine scelse di utilizzarla per decorare la fontana addossata al muro dell’Aracoeli. Successivamente, papa Innocenzo X, volle fosse fatta sistemare nel cortile di Palazzo Nuovo, nel prospetto dell’esedra che aveva progettato Filippo Barigioni dove è possibile vederla tutt’oggi.
Il Marforio si trova all’interno di una nicchia. E’ adagiato sopra il fianco destro e un panneggio gli copre la spalla sinistra e le gambe.
La conchiglia che stringe con la mano destra, la mano sinistra, il piede destro e parte del viso sono state aggiunte da Ruggero Bescapè nel restauro del 1594, su commissione di Della Porta.
La vasca in granito grigio originale del Marforio, oggi si trova ai piedi dell’obelisco di Piazza del Quirinale. Per anni era rimasta laddove era stata rinvenuta, nel Foro di Augusto e adoperata come abbeveratoio per il bestiame. Nel 1816 si decise di posizionarla sul colle dove ancora si trova.
L’ultimo restauro
La Fontana del Marforio e l’esedra che la accoglie è stata sottoposta nel settembre del 2021 a un importante restauro durato sei mesi, completamente finanziato da Swaroski con un contributo di 100mila euro.

The Marforio
The Marforio is an imposing sculpture dating back to the 1st century AD, located in the courtyard of Palazzo Nuovo at the Capitoline Museums. Over the centuries, he has never stopped giving his opinion on the work of the various politicians in the different eras he has gone through.
That’s right: Marforio is one of the six talking sculptures in Rome together with the famous Pasquino, Madama Lucrezia, the Porter, Abbot Luigi and Babuino.
Starting from the sixteenth century, the Romans used to affix anonymous messages to these sculptures, often containing criticisms or satirical verses against the rulers of the moment. These tickets took the name of pasquinate from the name of the best known and most chatty talking sculpture: the Pasquino.
What does Marforio represent?
Although the debate has never completely ended, it is very likely that the Marforio represents Ocean. Over the centuries it has crossed it has been seen as Jupiter, Neptune and even as the Tiber.
The fact is that the work was already known in the twelfth century so much so that it was designed by Beatricetto who proposed it as an ocean half-lying among the rocks, complete with a sea monster, dolphins and the shell that he raises with his right hand.
The place of the discovery and the name Marforio
The work was found in the Forum of Augustus near the Temple of Mars Ultor, in the area called the Forum of Mars in the medieval period. Thus, little by little, he would have assumed the deformation of the Latin name Martis Forum, or Marforio.
There is also another hypothesis relating to its singular name. It seems that the work in the past belonged to the Marfoli family who lived near the Mamertine Prison, right where the sculpture was until 1588.
The Marforio was a work particularly loved by Giacomo dalla Porta, so much so that he wanted to use it as an ornament for the fountain project in Piazza Colonna. Subsequently Pope Sixtus V wanted it to be moved to Piazza San Marco.
In the end he chose to use it to decorate the fountain leaning against the Aracoeli wall. Subsequently, Pope Innocent X wanted it to be placed in the courtyard of Palazzo Nuovo, in the façade of the exedra that Filippo Barigioni had designed where it can still be seen today.
The Marforio is located inside a niche. It rests on his right side and a drapery covers his left shoulder and legs.
The shell that holds with the right hand, the left hand, the right foot and part of the face were added by Ruggero Bescapè in the restoration of 1594, commissioned by Della Porta.
The original gray granite basin by Marforio is now located at the foot of the obelisk in Piazza del Quirinale. For years it had remained where it had been found, in the Forum of Augustus and used as a trough for livestock. In 1816 it was decided to place it on the hill where it still stands.
The latest restoration
The Fontana del Marforio and the exedra that houses it underwent a major restoration that lasted six months in September 2021, fully financed by Swaroski with a contribution of 100,000 euros.
