La Fontana del Tritone del Bernini
La Fontana del Tritone è un capolavoro frutto dell’ingegno di Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Un tempo era collocata in una zona suburbana mentre oggi, con gli stravolgimenti della città a cavallo fra Ottocento e Novecento, si trova nel bel mezzo dell’asfalto.
La Fontana del Tritone fu commissionata all’artista da papa Urbano VIII per decorare la piazza antistante il palazzo di famiglia ma anche per utilità pubblica. Cominciata nel 1642 e terminata un anno dopo, la fontana viene alimentata con una diramazione secondaria dell’Acqua Felice.
Le caratteristiche
Per realizzare questa opera il Bernini scelse non il marmo bianco di Carrara ma il travertino. Dalla vasca si ergono quattro delfini con la bocca aperta che con le code sorreggono una conchiglia bivalve aperta. Al centro della conchiglia compare Tritone con le gambe ricoperte di squame mentre soffia in una bucina che far zampillare l’acqua. Il getto d’acqua ricade sul corpo del Tritone per poi scendere nella conchiglia bivalve aperta. Infine ricade rumorosamente nella vasca sottostante.
Fra le code dei delfini intrecciate fra di loro si notano i due stemmi papali con le tre api, il simbolo della famiglia Barberini.
La vasca mistilinea è posizionata al livello del suolo. Purtroppo con il riassetto cittadino la fontana ha perso l’armonia che aveva con i palazzi circostanti.

Bernini’s Triton Fountain
The Triton Fountain is an ingenious masterpiece of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was once located in a suburban area while today, with the upheavals of the city at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it is located in the middle of the asphalt.
The Triton Fountain was commissioned to the artist by Pope Urban VIII to decorate the square in front of the family palace but also for public use. Begun in 1642 and finished a year later, the fountain is fed with a secondary branch of the Acqua Felice.
Features
To carry out this work, Bernini chose not white Carrara marble but travertine. Four dolphins rise from the tank with their mouths open and holding up an open bivalve shell with their tails. At the center of the shell Triton appears with his legs covered with scales while he blows into a hole that makes the water gush. The jet of water falls on the body of the Triton and then descends into the open bivalve shell. Finally, it noisily falls back into the tub below.
Among the tails of the dolphins intertwined with each other we can see the two papal coats of arms with the three bees, the symbol of the Barberini family.
The mixed-line tank is positioned at ground level. Unfortunately, with the reorganization of the city, the fountain has lost the harmony it had with the surrounding buildings.
