Oggi voglio raccontarvi qualcosa di nuovo che forse ancora non conoscete… dico forse perché lo so bene di avere molti lettori attenti e preparati. Da dove comincio? Ovvio, dall’inizio.

La costruzione della nuova Basilica di San Pietro era arrivata a un punto morto. Da troppi anni stava andando avanti con rallentamenti esagerati. Papa Paolo III Farnese decise allora di mettere in mano a me il progetto, avendo la certezza che avrei contribuito a dargli una svolta determinante. La possibilità dunque di portare a termine la realizzazione della basilica di San Pietro era direttamente collegata a me. Quella fu la mia salvezza dall’Inquisizione.

Dal momento in cui Gian Pietro Carafa venne nominato successore di Paolo III, le cose per me cambiarono e non poco. Salito sul trono di Pietro con il nome di Paolo IV, il primo giorno d’insediamento provvide a togliermi la rendita a vita che aveva stabilito per me papa Paolo III Farnese (ve ne ho parlato QUA).

Così proseguii a lavorare alla fabbrica di San Pietro a titolo gratuito, come se fosse un voto a Dio. Nelle lettere mie scritte all’epoca il riferimento al lavoro gratis fatto come voto è molto chiaro.

Perché il nuovo papa tanto ce l’aveva con me? Ebbene, già dal 1541 già ero molto vicino all’ambiente degli Spirituali, capeggiato per così dire da Vittoria Colonna, Reginaldo Polo e il cardinale Morone. Gli spirituali venivano accusati da Paolo IV di essere i principali divulgatori dell’eresia luterana in Italia. Tuttavia gli Spirituali non avevano una posizione così netta in contrasto con quella Cattolica ma cercavano più che altro un equilibrio più sensato che riportasse l’attenzione su Cristo.

Papa Paolo IV, provocando un grande subbuglio nell’Europa del tempo, fece incarcerare il cardinale Morone. Avrebbe volentieri imprigionato anche Polo ma era andato a Londra, protetto dalla regina Maria che mai avrebbe concesso l’estradizione chiesta dal papa.

La mia cara amica Colonna oramai non era più perseguibile perché nel 1547 era morta. Nel processo a Morone gli vennero mosse accuse che potevano benissimo essere mosse anche a me. Per prima cosa venne accusato di essere amico della Colonna e in seconda istanza di essersi concentrato esclusivamente sul ruolo salvifico del Cristo.

Inoltre, il cardinale Morone, venne accusato di ritenere superstizione il culto dei Vincoli di San Pietro. Evidentemente questa storia dei vincoli era una faccenda molto dibattuta all’interno del gruppo. Vi riporta niente alla mente? Pensate un po’… se non avessi cambiato la posizione del Mosè in corso d’opera, il patriarca avrebbe guardato proprio i vincoli. un caso che gli abbia girato la testa? Lo dubito fortemente.

Insomma, tutte le accuse mosse a Morone erano direttamente riconducibili a me. Avrei potuto finire benissimo nelle mani dell’Inquisizione se non si fosse giocato l’onore tutto della Chiesa sulla realizzazione della basilica di San Pietro che oramai si protraeva da troppo tempo. Il mio status di artista mi salvò.

Non è finita qua però. Il cardinale Morone fu uno degli ultimi miei committenti e per lui realizzai un dipinto con Cristo in Croce vivo. Ora il dipinto è andato perduto anche se c’è chi sostiene di averlo ritrovato da lungi. Fatto sta che il disegno che ancora c’è è autografo.

Pur di darmi contro, papa Paolo IV Carafa, nell’agosto del 1556, proibì categoricamente la rappresentazione del Cristo vivo in croce. Quel mio lavoro era molto noto all’epoca: la sua conoscenza s’era diffusa attraverso incisioni e riproduzioni. Quindi pure il mio disegno diventò fuori legge e le copie vennero fatte sparire anche se a distanza di secoli qualcuna di esse è tornata alla luce.

Inquisition: Pope Carafa and the living Christ on the Cross

Today I want to tell you something new that maybe you do not know yet … I say perhaps because I know very well that I have many attentive and prepared readers. Where do I start? Obviously, from the beginning.

The construction of the new St. Peter’s Basilica was at a standstill. For too many years it was going on with exaggerated delays. Pope Paul III Farnese decided to put the project in my hands, having the certainty that I would help to give it a decisive turn. The possibility, therefore, of completing the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica was directly connected to me. That was my salvation from the Inquisition.

From the day when Gian Pietro Carafa was appointed successor to Paul III, things changed for me and not a little. Ascended on the throne of Peter with the name of Paul IV, the first day of settlement provided to take away the life annuity that had established for me Pope Paul III Farnese (I have told you HERE).

So I continued to work at the San Pietro factory free of charge, as if it were a vow to God. In my letters written at the time, the reference to free work done as a vow is very clear.

Why did the new Pope have so much with me? Well, already since 1541 I was already very close to the environment of the Spirituals, headed as it were by Vittoria Colonna, Reginaldo Polo and Cardinal Morone. The spirituals were accused by Paul IV of being the main popularizers of Lutheran heresy in Italy. However, the Spirituali, however, did not have such a clear position in contrast with the Catholic one but more than anything else they sought a more sensible balance that brought attention to Christ.

Pope Paul IV, provoking a great turmoil in Europe at the time, had Cardinal Morone imprisoned. Polo would have gladly been imprisoned, but he had gone to London, protected by Queen Maria, who would never have granted the extradition requested by the pope.

My dear friend Colonna was no longer prosecutable because she died in 1547. In the trial of Morone, accusations were brought against him that could well have been brought to me too. First of all he was accused of being a friend of the Colonna and secondly of focusing exclusively on the saving role of Christ.

Moreover, Cardinal Morone was accused of holding superstition the cult of the Constraints of St. Peter. Evidently this story of constraints was a highly debated matter within the group. Does it bring you anything to mind? Think a little … if I had not changed the position of Moses during the course of the work, the patriarch would have looked at the constraints. a case that turned his head? I doubt it strongly.

In short, all the accusations made against Morone were directly attributable to me. I could have ended up very well in the hands of the Inquisition if the whole Church’s honor had not been played on the construction of the basilica of San Pietro which had been going on for too long. My status as an artist saved me.

It is not over here though. Cardinal Morone was one of my last clients and for him I made a painting with Christ on a living cross. Now the painting has been lost even if there are those who claim to have found it from afar. The fact is that the drawing that still exists is autograph.

In order to give myself against me, Pope Paul IV Carafa, in August 1556, categorically forbade the representation of Christ alive on the cross. That work was very well known at the time: his knowledge had spread through engravings and reproductions. Hence my design became outlawed and the copies were made to disappear even if some of them came back to light some centuries later.
