Il mi’ babbo mi voleva far studiare grammatica
Quando ancora ero un bimbetto, il mi’ babbo s’era intestardito a farmi studiar grammatica.
Mi mandò a lezione da Francesco Galatea, un letterato del tempo ma appena potevo me ne scappavo per i fatti miei. Io volevo scolpire e non avevo nessuna intenzione di passare tutta la vita a leggere e a scrivere.
Un bel giorno, durante le mie passeggiate mattutine rubate alle ore di studio, incontrai Francesco Granacci. Francesco era un ragazzino con qualche anno più di me e già andava a bottega dai fratelli Ghirlandaio: pittori affermati e apprezzati da tutti. Quanto lo invidiavo: lui poteva davvero imparare ciò che gli piaceva e io ero costretto a studiar lettere dal mi’ babbo.
Con Francesco diventammo in poco tempo grandi amici e ogni tanto riusciva a sottrarre qualche disegno ai due fratelli e me lo faceva avere. Io li copiavo con dedizione per apprendere i trucchi del mestiere e poi glie li ridavo sempre.
È proprio vero che gli amici si vedono nel momento del bisogno: grazie a lui mio padre si convinse a mandarmi a studiare presso i Ghirlandaio e da lì ebbe inizio la mia carriera artistica.
Ogni tanto ho ancora l’occasione di incontrarlo e si vanta di essere stato il mio talent scout, come si dice adesso. In effetti in qualche modo lo è stato.
A pensare quante randellate ho preso dal mi’ babbo che non voleva mandarmi a studiare disegno e scultura… e poi alla fine si vantava tutto e camminava quattro spanne da terra tanto era orgoglioso di avere un figlio così apprezzato e celebre.

My dad wanted me to study grammar
When I was still a little boy, my father had stubbornly made me study grammar. He sent me to class from Francesco Galatea, a scholar of the time but as soon as I could I escaped for my business. I wanted to sculpt and I had no intention of spending a lifetime reading and writing.
One fine day, during my morning walks stolen from my study hours, I met Francesco Granacci. Francesco was a boy a few years older than me and already went to the shop by the Ghirlandaio brothers: well-known painters and appreciated by all. How I envied him: he could really learn what he liked and I was forced to study letters from my father.
With Francesco, we soon became great friends and sometimes managed to steal a few drawings from the two brothers and made me have them. I copied them with dedication to learn the tricks of the trade and then I always gave them back.
It is true that friends are seen in times of need: thanks to him my father was convinced to send me to study at the Ghirlandaio and from there began my artistic career.
Sometimes I still have the chance to meet him and he boasts that he was my talent scout as they say now. In fact somehow it was.
To think how many blows I got from my father who did not want to send me to study drawing and sculpture … and then at the end he boasted everything and walked four feet off the ground so much he was proud to have a son so appreciated and famous.
