In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, vi propongo la medaglia in bronzo che venne ideata e coniata per celebrare il Quarto centenario della mia nascita, nel 1875.

A metter mano a questo manufatto fu più di un artista. Il mio volto venne modellato da Emilio Santarelli che aveva studiato scultura a Roma, al cospetto del grande Thorvaldsen.

L’altra faccia invece fu realizzata da Nicola Farnesi, artista lucchese che era stato allievo di Piero Casali. Casali molto ebbe a che fare nella sua vita con le monete già che era stato coniatore di monete per la Casa Reale e finanche per il Vaticano.

Sul verso della moneta, attorno al mio volto, si legge MICHEL PIU’ CHE MORTAL ANGEL DIVINO/ SANTARELLI F. La frase riportata fu quella scritta dall’Ariosto nel canto XXXIII dell’Orlando Furioso.

Michelangelo 550: the medal to celebrate the fourth centenary of my birth

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose the bronze medal that was designed and minted to celebrate the fourth centenary of my birth, in 1875.

More than one artist worked on this artifact. My face was modeled by Emilio Santarelli who had studied sculpture in Rome, in the presence of the great Thorvaldsen.

The other side was instead created by Nicola Farnesi, an artist from Lucca who had been a student of Piero Casali. Casali had a lot to do with coins in his life since he had been a minter of coins for the Royal House and even for the Vatican.

On the back of the coin, around my face, you can read MICHEL PIU’ CHE MORTAL ANGEL DIVINO/ SANTARELLI F. The phrase reported was the one written by Ariosto in canto XXXIII of Orlando Furioso.
