La Scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Giovane Coppia scolpita da Tullio Lombardo tra il 1505 e il 1510 circa.

È un bassorilievo in marmo di Carrara appartenente oggi al Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna, espressione del Rinascimento veneziano.

L’opera a lungo è stata interpretata come Bacco e Arianna ma al momento il riconoscimento dei due personaggi nelle figure scolpire, è oramai sorpassata e non più ritenuta corretta.

Di Tullio Lombardo non è noto dove sia noto né dove sia venuto al mondo. Era figlio di Pietro Lombardo sculture e fratello minore di Antonio, anche lui scultore e architetto.

Imparò i primi rudimenti della scultura nella bottega del babbo e la prima opera realizzata interamente da lui, probabilmente è il tondo con San Marco, oggi visibile nella cappella presbiteriale della chiesa di San Giobbe a Venezia.

Il rilievo con i due giovani emana sensualità. Sebbene non sia molto lo spessore lavorato, i ragazzi hanno sono caratterizzati da una straordinaria espressitità.

L’aria sognante di entrambi subito ci rimanda ai loro pensieri e ci fa domandare cosa stiano immaginando.

Sembra quasi che il giovane con il capo coronato di foglie di vite stia cantando, con le labbra semi dischiuse e il pomo d’Adamo in movimento, mentre la giovane con i capelli avvolti in una preziosa cuffia ricamata, ascolti.

Osservate con attenzione con quanta cura siano stati lavorati i capelli di lui e la cuffia di lei, con ancora visibili i buchi fatti con il trapano e i sottili ricami.

Sculpture of the day: the Young Couple by Lombardo

The Sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Young Couple sculpted by Tullio Lombardo between 1505 and 1510 approximately.

It is a bas-relief in Carrara marble that today belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, an expression of the Venetian Renaissance. The work has long been seen as Bacchus and Ariadne but at the moment the recognition of the two characters in the sculpted figures is now outdated and no longer considered correct.

It is not known where Tullio Lombardo is known or where he came into the world. He was the son of Pietro Lombardo sculptors and the younger brother of Antonio, also a sculptor and architect.

He learned the first rudiments of sculpture in his father’s workshop and the first work made entirely by him, is probably the tondo with San Marco, today visible in the presbytery chapel of the church of San Giobbe in Venice.

The relief with the two young people exudes sensuality. Although the thickness of the work is not very thick, the boys are characterized by an extraordinary expressiveness.

The dreamy look of both immediately brings us back to their thoughts and makes us wonder what they are imagining.

It almost seems that the young man with his head crowned with vine leaves is singing, with his lips half-opened and his Adam’s apple moving, while the young woman with her hair wrapped in a precious embroidered cap, listens.

Observe carefully how carefully his hair and her cap were worked, with the holes made with the drill and the thin embroidery still visible.
