Di tanto in tanto mi toccava occuparmi anche del bucato.

Mi spiego meglio: non ero io a lavare calzerotti, tovaglie, lenzuola e camicie ma le mandavo a far lavare a chi poteva farlo meglio di me.

Fino a qua non ci sarebbe nulla di singolare. Peculiare è il fatto che era mia abitudine scrivere su fogli di recupero, come sul retro di una lettera che poi inviai al papa, un elenco dettagliato di ogni capo dato a Lapo per essere pulito a dovere.

Nel codice Vaticano Latino sono custoditi alcuni di questi fogli che scrissi nel periodo in cui ero occupato a lavorare per la Sagrestia Nuova.

Curiosi di sapere quali panni fossi solito mandare a lavare?

“Panni sudici che si danno a lLapo: una nuova tovaglia lunga tre channe e mezo e larga 3 braccia… una tovaglia pur di lensa più sotctile, lunga una channa e 3 braccia e mezo e larga 3 braccia… dieci tovagliolini e uno chattivo…uno lenzuolo, lungo una channa e 3 braccia, e largo 3 braccia e 3 quarti, nuovo di 3 teli, sei chamicie, dua ciuvattoi, tre fazzoletti…“

Vi ho citato uno stralcio di una sola di quelle liste per mostrarvi non solo la tipologia di cenci che facevo lavare ma anche quanta minuzia dedicassi alla loro descrizione, con le misure precise e la tipologia del tessuto.

Temevo probabilmente che poi mi riconsegnassero panni non miei, magari di qualità peggiore o chissà, tagliassero parti delle tovaglie per far tovaglioli da rivendere.

Sempre meglio esser prudenti.

Dirty clothes to wash and those detailed descriptions

From time to time I also had to take care of the laundry.

Let me explain: I wasn’t the one who washed socks, tablecloths, sheets and shirts but I sent them to be washed by someone who could do it better than me.

Up to this point there would be nothing unusual. Peculiar is the fact that it was my habit to write on waste paper, like on the back of a letter that I later sent to the Pope, a detailed list of each item of clothing given to Lapo to be cleaned properly.

The Vatican Latin Codex contains some of these sheets that I wrote during the period in which I was busy working for the New Sacristy.

Curious to know which clothes I used to send to be washed?

“Dirty cloths that are given to Lapo: a new tablecloth three and a half yards long and three yards wide… a tablecloth of thinner fabric, one yard and three and a half yards long and three yards wide… ten napkins and a napkin… a sheet, one yard and three yards long and three and a half yards wide, new with three sheets, six shirts, two towels, three handkerchiefs…“

I have quoted you an excerpt from just one of those lists to show you not only the type of rags that I had washed but also how much attention I paid to their description, with precise measurements and the type of fabric.

I was probably afraid that they would then return to me clothes that were not mine, perhaps of worse quality or who knows, that they would cut parts of the tablecloths to make napkins for who knows who.

It is always better to be careful.
