Il Cristo Oltraggiato di Terrilli: capolavoro d’avorio al Louvre
La scultura del giorno che voglio proporvi oggi è Cristo Oltraggiato attribuito a Francesco Terrilli, realizzata tra tra la fine del Cinquecento e i primi decenni del Seicento.
Cristo è seduto sul più alto dei tre gradini. Appoggiandosi al braccio destro, lascia cadere lo sguardo a sinistra in un gesto rassegnazione dolorosa.
La figura, in un perfetto contrapposto che la rende dinamica, molto deve alle stampe di Dürer alle quali probabilmente Terrilli si ispirò.
Sul capo di Cristo manca la corona di spine ma, l’espressione di dolore impressa sul Suo volto, riesce a rendere bene l’idea della drammaticità di quello specifico momento.
L’opera realizzata in avorio presenta delle fratture importanti all’altezza a metà dell’avambraccio sinistro, sul collo e in altre parti del corpo.
In particolare la mano e l’avambraccio sono frutto evidentemente di un’integrazione realizzata chissà quando, fatta con un avorio completamente diverso dall’originale. Notate infatti il contrasto di tonalità di colore tra il corpo e la parte di braccio restaurato successivamente.
La scultura ha piccole dimensioni ma non per questo l’artista la realizzò con meno cura o attenzione. Si tratta di uno straordinario esempio della lavorazione dell’avorio, con un’incredibile cura dei dettagli e un’eccellente attenzione ai dettagli anatomici.
Alta solo 12 centimetri, l’opera appartiene alle collezioni del Louvre.

Terrilli’s Outraged Christ: an ivory masterpiece at the Louvre
The sculpture of the day that I want to propose to you today is Outraged Christ attributed to Francesco Terrilli, made between the end of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth century.
Christ is sitting on the highest of the three steps. Leaning on his right arm, he lets his gaze fall to the left in a gesture of painful resignation.
The figure, in a perfect contrapposto that makes it dynamic, owes much to Dürer’s prints from which Terrilli probably took inspiration.
The crown of thorns is missing from Christ’s head but the expression of pain imprinted on His face manages to convey the idea of the drama of that specific moment.
The work made of ivory has significant fractures at the height of the left forearm, on the neck and in other parts of the body.
In particular, the hand and forearm are evidently the result of an integration made who knows when, made with an ivory completely different from the original. Notice the contrast in color tones between the body and the part of the arm that was restored later.
The sculpture is small in size, but this does not mean that the artist made it with less care or attention. It is an extraordinary example of ivory workmanship, with incredible attention to detail and excellent attention to anatomical details.
Only 12 centimeters high, the work belongs to the Louvre collections.
