Il Tritone disegnato sulla parete della cucina di quella che fu una mia villa a Settignano, citato talvolta come Satiro, sta per essere immesso sul mercato.

Il caseggiato nei pressi di Firenze è stato venduto ma le proprietarie precedenti avevano provveduto a staccare il disegno murale realizzato a carboncino direttamente sull’intonaco.

L’attribuzione a me di quel disegno è ancora dibattuta ma ci tengo a precisare che Carmen Bambach, studiosa illustre della mia produzione grafica, l’ha voluto esporre alla colossale mostra del Metropolitan di New York del 2017 dal titolo Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer, confermandone l’attribuzione.

La villa ubicata sulle colline di Settignano è stata venduta nel 2023 dalla famiglia Sernesi, già priva del disegno in questione che verrà immesso sul mercato.

Le possibilità di interpretazione del soggetto, in parte andato perduto, sono varie. Il Tritone è quella forse più calzante a mio avviso ma c’è chi lo vede come un satiro mentre altri studiosi hanno pensato potesse essere un potente centauro marino.

La figura è assai compromessa. La parte inferiore delle gambe è andata perduta e nel corso degli anni e altri due pezzi di intonaco si sono staccati chissà come e chissà quando. Di primo acchito pare che questo Tritone voglia difendersi: alza il braccio destro stringendo in mano qualcosa che non c’è più e ha un’espressione a metà fra il ridicolo e l’arrabbiato.

Leggenda vuole che disegnai questo soggetto quando ero poco più che un bimbetto. Almeno questo è quello che racconta il Condivi ma probabilmente ha pure ragione. Non mi ricordo quando mi misi dinanzi a quella parete ma fatto sta che ancora qualche imprecisione anatomica c’è e pure qualche influenza del Pollaiolo assai evidente.

Sì, probabilmente ero ancora piccolo dato che negli anni immediatamente dopo raggiunsi una tale perfezione anatomica da far invidia a qualsiasi chirurgo o anatomista dei vostri tempi.

Gli studiosi han provato a datarlo e a loro avviso, sebbene non tutti siano d’accordo, avrei dovuto realizzare il Tritone in questione intorno al 1489, ovvero dopo le prime copie che eseguii da Giotto e Masaccio ma prima delle altre copie meglio eseguite dai medesimi pittori.

Anni fa funzionari del Ministero della Cultura dichiararono l’opera di importanza nazionale, vale a dire che non può lasciare l’Italia, se non in prestito. In caso di vendita, il Ministero della Cultura ha il diritto di prelazione per adeguare il prezzo di vendita e acquistare l’opera.

Il prezzo di mercato di quest’opera sarà da capogiro vista l’importante attribuzione della Bambach che non può essere trascurata. Basti pensare che nel 2022 Christie’s a Parigi ha battuto all’asta un mio bozzetto per oltre 23 milioni di euro.

Il mercante d’arte Orsi afferma però attraverso il New York Time che “trovare clienti in Italia per queste cose a quei prezzi è praticamente impossibile”.

Basti dire che quando l’opera è stata prestata al Met per la celebre mostra, come afferma una delle proprietarie Ilaria Sernesi, fu assicurata per quasi 24milioni di dollari.

A fine Ottocento i proprietari della villa miei discendenti vendettero la proprietà a un conte francese prima di appartenere a un americano che la lasciò in eredità a parent italiani che la cedettero alla famiglia Sernesi.

Nel 1979 il disegno del Tritone fu staccato dal muro per essere restaurato presso l’Opificio delle Pietre Dure di Firenze. Quando tornò a casa Sernesi, rimase appeso nella sala da pranzo della villa finché la famiglia non decise che fosse meglio conservarlo in un luogo più sicuro e fu trasferito in un magazzino protetto alla periferia di Firenze.

Non ci rimane che attendere per vedere come proseguirà la vendita e che ruolo avrà il Ministero della Cultura in merito.

The Satyr or Triton attributed to me will be sold at auction

The Triton drawn on the kitchen wall of what was one of my villas in Settignano, sometimes referred to as the Satyr, is about to be placed on the market.

The building near Florence was sold but the owners had taken steps to remove the charcoal mural drawing directly onto the plaster.

The attribution of that drawing to me is still debated but I would like to point out that Carmen Bambach, an illustrious scholar of my graphic production, wanted to exhibit it at the colossal exhibition at the Metropolitan in New York in 2017 entitled Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer confirming the attribution to me.

The villa located on the hills of Settignano was sold in 2023 by the Sernesi family, already without the design in question which will be placed on the market.

The possibilities for interpreting the subject, which has partly been lost, are various. The Triton is perhaps the most fitting one in my opinion but there are those who see him as a satyr while other scholars have thought he could have been a powerful marine centaur.

The figure is very compromised. The lower part of the legs was lost and over the years and two other pieces of plaster came off who knows how and who knows when. At first glance it seems that this Triton wants to defend himself: he raises his right arm, holding something that is no longer there and has an expression halfway between ridiculous and angry.

Legend has it that I drew this subject when I was little more than a child. At least this is what Condivi says but he is probably right. I don’t remember when I stood in front of that wall but the fact is that there are still some anatomical inaccuracies and also some very evident influence of Pollaiolo.

Yes, I was probably still small given that in the years immediately following I achieved such anatomical perfection that any surgeon or anatomist of your time would be the envy of any surgeon or anatomist of your time.

Scholars have tried to date it and in their opinion, although not everyone agrees, I should have created the Triton in question around 1489, i.e. after the first copies I made by Giotto and Masaccio but before the other copies better made by the same painters .

Years ago officials from the Ministry of Culture declared the work of national importance, meaning that it cannot leave Italy unless on loan. In the event of a sale, the Ministry of Culture has the right of pre-emption to adjust the sale price and purchase the work.

The market price of this work will certainly be dizzying given the important attribution by Bambach which cannot be overlooked. Suffice it to say that in 2022 Christie’s in Paris auctioned one of my sketches for over 23 million euros.

However, the art dealer Orsi states through the New York Times that “finding customers in Italy for these things at those prices is practically impossible”.

Suffice it to say that when the work was loaned to the Met for the famous exhibition, as one of the owners Ilaria Sernesi states, it was insured for almost 24 million dollars.

At the end of the 19th century, the owners of the villa, my descendants, sold the property to a French count before it belonged to an American who bequeathed it to Italian relatives who passed it on to the Sernesi family.

In 1979 the drawing of the Triton was detached from the wall to be restored at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. When Sernesi returned home, it remained hanging in the dining room of the villa until the family decided it was better to keep it in a safer place and it was moved to a protected warehouse on the outskirts of Florence.

We just have to wait to see how the sale will continue and what role the Ministry of Culture will have in this regard.
