La Scultura del giorno: la Bagnante di Prosper d’Epinay
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo è la sensuale Bagante, scolpita nel candido marmo statuario di Carrara dall’artista francese Prosper d’Epinay.
Nato nelle Mauritius britanniche, Prosper d’Epinay era figlio di un influente personaggio politico. Nel 1851 si trasferì a Parigi dove cominciò a lavorare disegnando caricature.
Sette anni dopo pensò bene di dedicarsi completamente alla scultura e per conoscere le opere dei grandi del passato, non potè fare a meno di partire alla volta di Roma.
Particolarmente apprezzato per i busti che scolpiva per i membri dell’alta società, il ritratto marmoreo che fece a Edoardo, principe di Galles, venne comprato dalla regina Vittoria.
Fu un artista eclettico e le sue opere spaziano dai soggetti storici alla mitologia passando per una serie di giovani donne dalle forme languide e sensuali come in questo caso.
La scultura della Bagnante raffigura una giovane ragazza greca che si spoglia accanto a una fontana e l’artista volle apporre la sua firma e la data di esecuzione, 1872, sulla base.
A sorprendere è la resa del panneggio che la giovane solleva al di sopra del capo e che ancora le avvolge le spalle, lasciandole le natiche nude.
La leggiadria del gesto abbinato alla sinuosità delle forme, rende questa scultura di d’Epinay una fra le più sensuali alle quali ha dato forma nel corso della sua vita.
La Bagnante appartiene a una collezione privata.

Sculpture of the day: The Bather by Prosper d’Epinay
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you is the sensual Bagante sculpted in white Carrara statuary marble by the French artist Prosper d’Epinay.
Born in British Mauritius, Prosper d’Epinay was the son of an influential political figure. In 1851 he moved to Paris where he began working drawing caricatures.
Seven years later he thought it best to dedicate himself completely to sculpture and to get to know the works of the greats of the past, he couldn’t help but leave for Rome.
Particularly prized for the busts he sculpted for members of high society, the marble portrait he made of Edward, Prince of Wales, was bought by Queen Victoria.
He was an eclectic artist and his works range from historical subjects to mythology, passing through a series of young women with languid and sensual forms as in this case.
The Bather sculpture depicts a young Greek girl undressing next to a fountain and the artist wanted to place her signature and the date of execution, 1872, on the base.
What is surprising is the rendering of her drapery which the young woman raises above her head and which still wraps around her shoulders, leaving her buttocks bare.
The gracefulness of the gesture combined with the sinuosity of the forms makes this sculpture by d’Epinay one of the most sensual that he gave shape to during his life.
The Bather belongs to a private collection.
