Mandato in terra da Dio per mostrare agli altri il modo di fare arte.

Questo è quanto scrisse il caro amico Giorgio Vasari nelle vite: “E questo nell’arte nostra è quello esempio e quella gran pittura mandata da Dio a gli uomini in terra, acciò che veggano come il fato…” .

Sebbene non è un segreto fosse stato un affezionato amico, il Vasari qualcosa di vero nelle sue parole c’è e vale la pena metterlo in luce.

Segnai di fatto un prima e un dopo, aprendo nuove strade e cimentandomi con imprese colossali.

Il mio passaggio sulla terra ma soprattutto i miei lavori, hanno avuto un’influenza non trascurabile sui contemporanei e sugli artisti che sono arrivati dopo di me.

Basti pensare a quanta importanza è stata data poi alla raffigurazione del corpo nudo come riflesso della perfezione di Dio nell’arte Rinascimentale e successiva.

Il volere e il sapere riproporre la figura umana priva di vesti catturata in innumerevoli pose ha caratterizzato la mia intera produzione artistica.

Gli studi anatomici che feci sui cadaveri dello Spedale di Santo Spirito a Firenze da ragazzo, mi permisero di acquisire una conoscenza del corpo al limite del possibile.

Quella conoscenza mi fu indispensabile per mettere a frutto ciò che la mente mi comandava.

Quei corpi che a un certo punto, dopo il Concilio di Trento, sucitarono scandalo, non erano altro che la perfezione del Creatore che ci fece a immagine e somiglianza sua.

The triumph of the body

Sent to earth by God to show others the way of making art. This is what my dear friend Giorgio Vasari wrote in his lives: “And this in our art is that example and that great painting sent by God to men on earth, so that they may see how fate…” .

Although it is no secret that Vasari was a fond friend, there is some truth in his words and it is worth highlighting.

I effectively marked a before and an after, opening new paths and attempting colossal undertakings.

My passage on earth but above all my works have had a non-negligible influence on my contemporaries and artists who came after me.

Just think of how much importance was then given to the depiction of the naked body as a reflection of the perfection of God in Renaissance and subsequent art.

The desire and knowledge to re-propose the naked human figure captured in countless poses has characterized my entire artistic production.

The anatomical studies I carried out on the corpses of the Santo Spirito Hospital in Florence as a boy allowed me to acquire as much knowledge of the body as possible.

That knowledge was indispensable for me to make use of what my mind commanded me.

Those bodies which at a certain point, after the Council of Trent, caused scandal, were nothing other than the perfection of the Creator who made us in his image and likeness.
