Iniziai a metter mano alla volta della Cappella Sistina nel 1508 e la portai a termine nel 1512. A conti fati rimasi impegnato con quel grandioso progetto per quattro anni ma per realizzare gli affreschi impiegai un tempo inferiore pari a circa tre anni.

Nel conteggio del periodo impiegato a metter mano a pennelli e colori bisogna infatti escludere la parte iniziale che servì per allestire il ponteggio che avevo progettato io e predisporre il lavoro da eseguire poi.

Inoltre bisogna tenere in considerazione anche tutti quei mesi in cui non lavorai nella Cappella Sistina, dopo la partenza di Giulio II per Bologna. Fra il settembre del 1510 e l’agosto del 1511 rimasi fermo o meglio, non misi mano agli affreschi ma sfruttai il tempo per realizzare altri progetti e continuare a studiare i disegni per le composizioni da riportare sulla volta.

Per realizzare la seconda parte della volta, quella che iniziai a dipingere al momento della ripresa dei lavori, impiegai solamente tredici mesi.

Pensate un po’: poco meno di due anni per affrescare la prima parte e poco più di un anno per la seconda parte. Sembra quasi incredibile ma vedendo gli affreschi dal basso già realizzati qualcosa cambiai di significativo che mi faceva lavorare più velocemente.

Le figure si ingrandirono notevolmente addirittura fino ad occupare tutto lo spazio disponibile come nel caso dei riquadri della Separazione della Luce dalle Tenebre e della Separazione della Terra dalle Acque in cui Dio Padre con il suo corpo non lascia posto ad altre immagini.

Prima di salutarvi vi lascio una considerazione del compianto Fabrizio Mancinelli, scomparso nel 1994. All’epoca del grande restauro dei miei affreschi sistini, era il direttore dei lavori.

“Chi ha avuto il privilegio di lavorare o anche solo di osservare gli affreschi stando sul ponteggio del restauro, nelle stesse condizioni visive cioè di Michelangelo, non può non essere rimasto ammirato e perfino stupefatto di fronte alla perfezione e sicurezza della stesura, come pure dinnanzi alla monumentalità e alle incredibili proporzioni delle figure create dal maestro”.

The Vault of the Sistine Chapel. Three years to fresco it and not four: that’s why

I began to work on the vault of the Sistine Chapel in 1508 and completed it in 1512. On balance I was busy with that grandiose project for four years but it took me less time, about three years, to complete the frescoes.

In counting the time taken to get to grips with brushes and colors, we must in fact exclude the initial part that was used to put up the scaffolding that I had designed and prepare the work to be carried out afterwards.

Furthermore, we must also take into consideration all those months in which I did not work in the Sistine Chapel, after the departure of Julius II for Bologna. Between September 1510 and August 1511 I stayed still or rather, I didn’t get to grips with the frescoes but used the time to carry out other projects and continue to study the drawings for the compositions to be placed on the vault.

It took me only thirteen months to complete the second part of the vault, the one I began to paint when work resumed. Think about it: just under two years to paint the first part and just over a year for the second part. It seems almost unbelievable but seeing the already completed frescoes from below, I changed something significantly that made me work faster.

The figures were considerably enlarged even to occupy all the available space as in the case of the panels of the Separation of Light from Darkness and the Separation of the Earth from the Waters in which God the Father with his body leaves no room for other images.

Before saying goodbye, I leave you with a consideration of the late Fabrizio Mancinelli, who passed away in 1994. At the time of the great restoration of my Sistine frescoes, he was the director of the works.

“Those who have had the privilege of working or even just observing the frescoes standing on the scaffolding during the restoration, in the same visual conditions, i.e. those of Michelangelo, cannot fail to have been admired and even amazed by the perfection and certainty of the drafting, as well as before to the monumentality and incredible proportions of the figures created by the master”.
