Dal 1964, nella parte esterna della Cupola di San Pietro, è possibile vedere sopra una colonnina in marmo un busto che mi ritrae.

E’ un omaggio a me che a lungo mi occupai sia del progetto della Basilica che della cupola, fatto collocare sulle terrazze in occasione del Quattrocentesimo anno dalla morte che si celebrò nel 1964 per volere di papa Paolo VI Montini.

Montini per altro è stato proclamato santo da papa Francesco assai di recente, il 14 ottobre del 2018.

Così incastonato in una nicchia di travertino, mio busto in bronzo che ha le stesse sembianze dei tre busti che realizzò Daniele da Volterra su commissione del mi nipote Lionardo e di Leone Leoni, sorprende i visitatori che discendono le scale dopo essere saliti fino in cima alla cupola di San Pietro.

Poco sopra il busto è stata posta la targa marmorea che riporta l’inizio del motu proprio scritto da papa Paolo III l’11 di ottobre del 1549 in mio favore, in veste di sovrintendente alla costruzione della Basilica di San Pietro.

My bronze bust at the base of St. Peter’s dome

Since 1964, on the outside of the dome of St. Peter’s, it is possible to see a bust portraying me above a marble column.

It is a tribute to me who for a long time dealt with both the design of the Basilica and the dome, placed on the terraces on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of his death which was celebrated in 1964 at the behest of Pope Paul VI Montini.

Montini, on the other hand, was proclaimed a saint by Pope Francis very recently, on October 14, 2018.

Thus set in a travertine niche, my bronze bust that has the same appearance as the three busts that Daniele da Volterra made on commission of my nephew Lionardo and Leone Leoni, surprises visitors who descend the stairs after climbing to the top of the Dome of St. Peter.

A little above the bust was placed the marble plaque that shows the beginning of the motu proprio written by Pope Paul III on 11 October 1549 in my favor, as superintendent of the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica.
