Da domani 24 febbraio 2022 aprirà al pubblico la nuova mostra “Le tre Pietà di Michelangelo. Non vi si pensa quanto sangue costa” al Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Firenze.

Questa mattina è stata presentata alla stampa alla presenza dei curatori Barbara Jatta direttrice dei Musei Vaticani, Sergio Risaliti direttore del Museo del Novecento, Claudio Salsi direttore del Castello Sforzesco, Luca Bagnoli presidente dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore e Timothy Verdon, direttore del Museo del Duomo.

All’interno della Sala della Tribuna a me dedicata, i visitatori potranno fare un confronto diretto fra la mia prima Pietà Vaticana per la quale stipulai il contratto alla fine dell’agosto del 1498, la Pietà Bandini della maturità e la Pietà Rondanini, l’opera estrema alla quale lavorai di subbia e martello fino a cinque giorni prima di spirare.

Il fulcro dell’esposizione è per l’appunto il modo in cui affrontai il tema della Pietà in un arco di tempo di circa cinquant’anni in relazione alla mia personale maturazione spirituale.

In un momento così delicato come quello che stiamo vivendo in questi giorni, con una pandemia ancora in corso e venti di guerra che soffiano sempre più forti, questa mostra offre gli spunti necessari per fermarsi a meditare sulla condizione umana.

L’esposizione che sarà accessibile fino al 1 agosto 2022 e comprende la Pietà Bandini da poco restaurata da Paola Rosa con la collaboratrice Emanuela Peiretti nella sua collocazione abituale mentre dalla parte opposta della sala sono collocate la Pietà Vaticana e la Pietà Rondanini o meglio, i calchi delle due opere provenienti dai Musei Vaticani.

Chi avrà l’occasione di visitare la mostra “Le tre Pietà di Michelangelo. Non vi si pensa quanto sangue costa” potrà ammirare le tre Pietà assieme sebbene due saranno presenti in calco.

Cosa ne penso di questa mostra?

Molto interessante l’idea di fondo. Vedere le tre opere assieme è una di quelle occasioni che non si possono perdere. Mi sarebbe piaciuto che i due calchi fossero posizionati ai lati della Bandini e che ci fosse la possibilità di girargli attorno per vederli da ogni angolazione. Così non è ma pazienza, è probabile che non ci fosse lo spazio sufficiente per poter sistemare le opere nel modo che mi sarebbe garbato di più.

“Le tre Pietà di Michelangelo. Non vi si pensa quanto sangue costa” è stata allestita in concomitanza con l’incontro Mediterraneo frontiera di pace 2022 al quale prenderanno parte i vescovi e i sindaci del Mediterraneo e ci sarà la partecipazione straordinaria di Papa Francesco.

Il confronto fra le tre Pietà, come sostiene Timothy Verdon, Direttore del Museo dell’Opera del Duomo: “Permette di misurare la crescita stilistica del Buonarroti nei cinquant’anni che separano la Pietà giovanile dalle altre due, e l’evoluzione assai più concentrata ma anche drammatica tra la Pietà fiorentina e quella milanese. Permette inoltre di cogliere la maturazione del pensiero di Michelangelo intorno al soggetto sacro tra la fine del Quattrocento e la metà del secolo successivo, mettendo a fuoco il nesso tra vita ed arte nello scultore credente che, per buona parte della sua carriera, era al servizio dei papi e quindi interprete privilegiato delle istanze di una Chiesa in dinamico cambiamento”. 

A partire dal prossimo autunno i calchi delle tre Pietà verranno portati a Milano ed esposti nella Sala delle Cariatidi di Palazzo Reale, all’interno di in un nuovo allestimento appositamente progettato allo scopo.

“The three Pietà of Michelangelo” in Florence

From tomorrow 24 February 2022 the new exhibition “The three Pietàs of Michelangelo. You don’t think how much blood it costs “at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence.

The exhibition which will be accessible until 1 August 2022 and includes the Pietà Bandini recently restored by Paola Rosa with the collaborator Emanuela Peiretti in its usual location while on the opposite side of the room are the Vatican Pietà and the Rondanini Pietà or rather, the casts of the two works from the Vatican Museums.

What do I think of this exhibition?

The basic idea is very interesting. Seeing the three works together is one of those opportunities that cannot be missed. I would have liked that the two casts were positioned on the sides of the Bandini and that there was the possibility to go around it to see them from every angle. This is not the case, but patience, it is likely that there was not enough space to be able to arrange the works in the way that would have pleased me more.

“The three Pietà by Michelangelo. You don’t think how much blood it costs “was set up to coincide with the 2022 Mediterranean frontier peace meeting in which the bishops and mayors of the Mediterranean will take part and there will be the extraordinary participation of Pope Francis.

The comparison between the three Pietà, as stated by Timothy Verdon, Director of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo: “It allows us to measure the stylistic growth of Buonarroti in the fifty years that separate the youthful Pietà from the other two, and the much more concentrated evolution but also dramatic between the Florentine and the Milanese Pietà. It also allows us to grasp the maturation of Michelangelo’s thought around the sacred subject between the end of the fifteenth century and the middle of the following century, focusing on the connection between life and art in the believing sculptor who, for a good part of his career, was at the service of the popes and therefore privileged interpreter of the demands of a Church in dynamic change “.

Starting next autumn, the casts of the three Pietàs will be brought to Milan and exhibited in the Sala delle Cariatidi of Palazzo Reale, inside a new setting specially designed for this purpose.

On the occasion of this interesting exhibition, a catalog published by Silvana Editoriale was published with cards and essays written by the curators including contributions from other scholars.
