My signature above the Atlas Slave
The Slave Atlas is one of the four prisons arranged along the corridor of the Galleria dell’Accademia which leads directly to the Tribuna del David.
Like the other prisons, the figure seems to be trapped in the raw marble: it struggles as if to free itself from that situation. Why did I leave them like this? Open up the sky … a debate could open up for months, years or centuries but the question would remain unresolved.
Often the solution to puzzles that seem more difficult, however, we have under our noses but it seems so simple that it is the first to be given as inaccurate. And I simply left them like this, as I abandoned other works not completed, why did I lack the time?
The Slave Atlas with respect to the others has something more than very precious. Do you have any idea what it is? Well, on the top of the sculpture, on the not yet rough-hewn part, there are some symbols that chiseled over it when the block was still in the quarry.
There are three intertwined circles indicating that the block was for me, the letter L of the name Leone or the hollow head and a sort of very stylized vessel.
