Le complesse decorazioni della cupola mia
Il progetto della doppia cupola della Basilica di San Pietro è mio. Certo, della Porta e Fontana per un problema di stabilità modificarono la parte esterna ma la quella visibile dall’interno della basilica è ancora la mia.
42 metri di diametro e una decorazione a mosaico straordinaria. Beh, con la decorazione io non c’entro nulla ma è comunque di pregevole fattura. Ci vollero quindici anni di duro lavoro per rivestirla tutta e non mancarono certo le difficoltà. Lavorare arrampicandosi sulle impalcature a oltre cento metri di altezza nel Seicento non era mica una cosa facile.
Quei mosaicisti non solo erano dotati di un innato senso di equilibrio, necessario per salvarsi la pelle, ma erano pure bravi artigiani. La decorazione della cupola venne commissionata da papa Clemente VIII ma i lavori si conclusero sotto il successivo pontificato di Paolo V.
Non fu facile adattare il mosaico alla curvatura e nemmeno agli spicchi formati dai costoloni che avevo progettato. Capite bene che creare un disegno unico non era possibile e c’era da studiare qualcosa che potesse essere suddiviso in tanti settori differenti.
Fu il Cavalier d’Arpino, noto alle cronache per essere stato in qualche modo il maestro del Caravaggio, a progettare la decorazione. Nelle lunette della base ci sono raffigurati sedici vescovi e patriarchi, immediatamente sopra compaiono la Vergine Madre, Cristo, San Giovanni e i dodici Apostoli. A seguire vennero realizzati i mosaici di quattro ordini di angeli con tanto di cherubini e serafini. La base della lanterna è decorata da un cerchio blu pieno di stelle e al centro della lanterna si vede l’immagine di Dio.
Notare dal basso tutti questi dettagli è un’impresa non difficile ma impossibile. I dettagli si possono notare solo su foto scattate a distanza ravvicinata. I mosaici visti dal pavimento, a 100 metri di distanza, divengono un tutt’uno indistinguibile.
Ecco, se questa complessa decorazione a mosaico, ricca di oro, fosse stata realizzata mentre ancora ero in vita credo che mi sarei parecchio alterato. Detestavo l’utilizzo a profusione dell’oro, lo sfarzo e l’ostentazione esagerata di una chiesa sempre più distante dalle persone e sempre più incline a pensare a mostrare il proprio potere, la propria supremazia.

The complex decorations of my dome
The design of the double dome of St. Peter’s Basilica is mine. Of course, della Porta and Fontana, due to a stability problem, modified the external part but the one visible from inside the basilica is still mine.

It took fifteen years of hard work to cover it all and there were certainly difficulties. Working on the scaffolding at a height of over one hundred meters in the seventeenth century was not an easy task.
Those mosaicists were not only endowed with an innate sense of balance, necessary to save their skin, but they were also good artisans. The decoration of the dome was commissioned by Pope Clement VIII but the works ended under the subsequent certificate of Paul V.
It was not easy to adapt the mosaic to the curvature nor to the segments formed by the ribs I had designed. You understand that creating a unique design was not possible and there was something to be studied that could be subdivided into many different sectors.
It was the Cavalier of Arpino, known to the chronicles for having been somehow the master of Caravaggio, to design the decoration. In the lunettes of the base there are depicted sixteen bishops and patriarchs, immediately above appearing the Virgin Mother, Christ, St. John and the twelve Apostles. Following this, the mosaics of the fourth order of angels were built, complete with cherubs and seraphim. The base of the lantern is decorated with a blue circle full of stars and at the center of the lantern you can see the image of God.
Noting all these details from below is not a difficult but impossible task. The details can be seen only on photos taken at close range. The mosaics seen from the floor, 100 meters away, become an indistinguishable whole.
Well, if this complex mosaic decoration, rich in gold, had been made while I was still alive, I think I would have changed a lot. I hated the profusion of gold, the ostentation and the exaggerated ostentation of a church more and more distant from people and more and more inclined to think about showing their power, their supremacy.
