La Creazione di Eva
La Creazione di Eva occupa il centro esatto della volta della Sistina. Riempii tutto il riquadro con solo tre figure: Adamo giacente, Eva che riceve la vita e Dio Padre che pare benedire la sua nuova creatura. Guardate Adamo ed Eva: sono molto giovani qui, quasi due ragazzini, ancora lontani dal Peccato Originale.
“L’un quasi morto per essere prigione del sonno, e l’altra divenuta viva e fatta vigilantissima” come scrisse il Vasari. In effetti Eva ha le mani giunte e ha un atteggiamento che fa tanto pensare a un gesto di gratitudine verso Dio.
Lui addormentato da Dio poco dopo aver ricevuto il soffio vitale per poter creare Eva da una sua costola, è semi sdraiato e ha una posizione serpentinata. Il paesaggio è essenziale ma se l’avessi riempito di altre figure i personaggi principali si sarebbero persi nella scenografia e sicuramente il risultato finale sarebbe stato alterato.
Il riquadro centrale è circondato da quattro ignudi che sorreggono i medaglioni bronzei istoriati. A queste figure feci assumere pose totalmente differenti le une dalle altre. Se fino al momento avevo adoperato immagini speculari, da questo riquadro in poi decisi di affrescare gli ignudi con un po’ più di libertà, senza seguire alcuno schema ideale.
Sapete, quella porzione di affresco, quando la dipinsi, si trovava al di là della transenna marmorea realizzata ornata da Mino da Fiesole e da vari aiuti. Questa separazione serviva per separare il presbiterio dalla parte destinata ai fedeli ma successivamente si decise di spostarla di cinque metri in direzione dell’ingresso principale.

The Creation of Eve occupies the exact center of the Sistine vault. I filled the whole box with only three figures: Adam lying, Eve receiving life and God the Father who seems to bless his new creature. Look at Adam and Eve: they are very young here, almost two little boys, still far from Original Sin.
“The one almost died to be a prison of sleep, and the other became alive and very vigilant” as Vasari wrote. In fact, Eva has folded hands and has an attitude that makes us think of a gesture of gratitude towards God.
He fell asleep by God shortly after receiving the breath of life to be able to create Eve from one of his ribs, is semi-lying and has a serpentine position. The landscape is essential but if I had filled it with other figures the main characters would have lost themselves in the scenography and surely the final result would have been altered.
The central panel is surrounded by four naked parts that support the engraved bronze medallions. To these figures I assumed poses totally different from each other. If up to the moment I had used specular images, from this box on I decided to paint the naked with a little more freedom, without following any ideal scheme.
You know, that portion of the fresco, when I painted it, was beyond the marble hurdle made by Mino da Fiesole and various aids. This separation was used to separate the presbytery from the part intended for the faithful but later decided to move it five meters in the direction of the main entrance.
