ne l’inferno men doglia,
se tuo beltà l’adorna,
fie, parte c’altri ti contempla e vede.
S’al cielo ascende e riede,
com’io seco desio
e con tal cura e con sì caldo affetto,
fie men fruire Dio,
s’ogni altro piacer cede,
Che me’ d’amarti aspetto,

Stronger Than Death

What if one’s love for another were so powerful that it persisted even beyond death?

In the madrigal I present here, I venture to imagine what might happen if the soul were to reunite with the body, allowing it to once again behold the beauty it so deeply desires. It matters not whether fate assigns me to Hell or to Paradise; in either realm, the presence of the one I love would continue to exert an extraordinary power over me.

If beauty could reach me even in the afterlife

If, following death, the soul returns to its body—as the Christian faith teaches regarding the resurrection of the flesh—then I choose to imagine that love, too, might endure.

Even Hell—a place of suffering and damnation—would become less painful if I could gaze upon the beauty of the one I love.

The mere thought of seeing her is enough to suggest a lessening of my torment. Her presence would offer a comfort capable of reaching me even in the most harrowing of places, where all hope seems lost.

Yet, my thoughts go further. Should she ascend to Paradise and I find myself by her side, even the joy of contemplating God might seem less intense when compared to the sight of her face.

Stronger than death

In these verses, I carry my longing beyond the boundaries of earthly life. I dream of being able to love this woman even more intensely than I do now—now, while her beauty stands before my eyes, yet time still keeps us from the future.

For the damned, any reduction in suffering brings great relief; for the blessed, a joy that is perhaps marginally less profound does not diminish the ultimate happiness of Paradise.

This is how I envision a love capable of transcending even eternity. I do not offer an answer to the mystery of death; instead, I entrust a hope to poetry: that the beauty we have loved may not vanish, and that desire may endure even when life has come to an end.

ne l’inferno men doglia,
se tuo beltà l’adorna,
fie, parte c’altri ti contempla e vede.
S’al cielo ascende e riede,
com’io seco desio
e con tal cura e con sì caldo affetto,
fie men fruire Dio,
s’ogni altro piacer cede,
Che me’ d’amarti aspetto,
