Una notte di festa trasformata in pochi minuti in una notte di paura. A Ortona, in provincia di Chieti, il Castello Aragonese, uno dei simboli della città affacciato sul mare, è stato circondato dalle fiamme al termine dei festeggiamenti per San Rocco.

Era da poco passata la mezzanotte quando, mentre centinaia di persone stavano ancora lasciando la zona dopo lo spettacolo piromusicale, sul costone della fortezza è comparso un denso fumo. Poi le fiamme hanno iniziato a salire lungo la vegetazione, diventando visibili da diversi punti del centro cittadino e dal porto.

In pochi istanti è scattato l’allarme.

Due incendi sul costone della fortezza

Secondo le prime ricostruzioni, il primo rogo si sarebbe sviluppato sul versante sud del Castello Aragonese, a ridosso della fortificazione.

Il fumo era stato notato già durante i fuochi, ma soltanto dopo la conclusione dello spettacolo l’incendio è apparso in tutta la sua evidenza. Una grande colonna di fumo si è alzata alle spalle del monumento, mentre il bagliore delle fiamme illuminava il costone.

Il primo fronte è stato affrontato dai vigili del fuoco e dalle squadre della protezione civile e domato in circa quaranta minuti.

Sembrava che l’emergenza fosse ormai sotto controllo. Ma non era ancora finita.

Un secondo rogo vicino alle scalette verso la Via Verde

Mentre molte persone osservavano l’intervento tra largo Castello e via d’Annunzio, un secondo incendio è divampato lungo la fiancata nord della fortezza, nella zona delle scalette che dal Castello scendono verso la Via Verde, nei pressi del parco Ciavocco.

Questa seconda fase dell’emergenza si è rivelata più complessa.

Le squadre hanno dovuto lavorare a lungo per raggiungere e spegnere tutti i focolai. Per garantire una quantità sufficiente di acqua è stato necessario anche l’arrivo di un camion cisterna.

Le operazioni sono andate avanti fino alle 2 del mattino, quando anche l’ultimo fronte è stato definitivamente spento e l’area è stata messa in sicurezza.

Le immagini del Castello Aragonese di Ortona avvolto dal fumo, con le fiamme che si sviluppavano sul costone a picco sul mare, mettono i brividi.

Vigili del fuoco al lavoro fino alle 2

Alle 2.10 il Comune ha comunicato che il rogo era stato domato grazie all’intervento dei vigili del fuoco e della protezione civile.

Sono state avviate anche le verifiche necessarie per accertare eventuali danni al Castello Aragonese e alle aree interessate dall’incendio.

L’amministrazione comunale guidata dal sindaco Angelo Di Nardo ha ringraziato le squadre intervenute per la rapidità e la professionalità dimostrate durante le operazioni.

Anche alcuni spettatori feriti

Nella concitazione della serata si parla inoltre di alcune persone rimaste ustionate, con ferite al volto e alla fronte. Su questo aspetto saranno necessari ulteriori accertamenti per chiarire il numero e le condizioni delle persone coinvolte.

La festa di San Rocco, che aveva richiamato centinaia di persone a Ortona anche per l’ultima serata della Sagra degli Antichi Sapori e delle Notti in Verde, si è dunque conclusa con immagini che nessuno avrebbe voluto vedere.

Il giorno dopo resta la paura per uno dei simboli di Ortona

Il Castello Aragonese non è soltanto una fortificazione. La sua posizione spettacolare sul mare e la sua storia lo hanno trasformato nel tempo in uno dei luoghi più rappresentativi di Ortona.

Per questo le immagini dell’incendio hanno colpito così profondamente la comunità.

Adesso l’attenzione è rivolta alle verifiche sul monumento e sul costone interessato dalle fiamme. Bisognerà capire quali danni abbia provocato realmente il rogo e soprattutto ricostruire con precisione la dinamica dell’incendio.

Una notte cominciata con i fuochi della festa di San Rocco è finita con le sirene dei vigili del fuoco, il fumo sopra il mare e il Castello Aragonese illuminato dalle fiamme.

E con una domanda che, inevitabilmente, resta sospesa: quanto può essere sicuro accendere fuochi d’artificio in un luogo così delicato?

Aragonese Castle in flames after fireworks display: fear in Ortona

A night of celebration quickly turned into a night of fear. In Ortona, in the province of Chieti, the Aragonese Castle, one of the city’s symbols overlooking the sea, was engulfed in flames at the end of the celebrations for San Rocco.

It was just after midnight when, as hundreds of people were still leaving the area after the fireworks display, thick smoke appeared on the fortress’s ridge. Then the flames began to rise through the vegetation, becoming visible from various points in the city center and the port.

The alarm was raised within moments.

Two fires on the fortress’s ridge

According to initial reports, the first blaze broke out on the southern slope of the Aragonese Castle, close to the fortification.

The smoke had already been noticed during the fireworks display, but only after the display concluded did the fire become fully evident. A large column of smoke rose behind the monument, while the glow of the flames illuminated the cliff.

The first fire was tackled by firefighters and civil defense teams and extinguished in about forty minutes.

It seemed the emergency was under control. But it wasn’t over yet.

While many people watched the operation between Largo Castello and Via d’Annunzio, a second fire broke out along the northern side of the fortress, near the steps leading from the Castle to the Via Verde, near Ciavocco Park.

This second phase of the emergency proved more complex.

The teams had to work long hours to reach and extinguish all the fires. To ensure a sufficient quantity of water, the arrival of a tanker truck was also necessary.

The operations continued until 2:00 a.m., when the last fire was finally extinguished and the area was secured.

The images of Ortona’s Aragonese Castle, engulfed in smoke, with flames billowing from the cliff overlooking the sea, are chilling.

At 2:10 AM, the Municipality announced that the fire had been extinguished thanks to the intervention of firefighters and civil protection.

The necessary checks have also begun to determine any damage to the Aragonese Castle and the areas affected by the fire.

The municipal administration, led by Mayor Angelo Di Nardo, thanked the teams who responded for their speed and professionalism during the operations.

Several spectators were also injured.

During the evening’s turmoil, there were reports of several people suffering burns, with injuries to their faces and foreheads. Further investigations will be necessary to clarify the number and conditions of those involved.

The feast of San Rocco, which had attracted hundreds of people to Ortona for the final evening of the Festival of Ancient Flavors and Green Nights, thus concluded with images that no one would have wanted to see.

The next day, fear remains for one of Ortona’s symbols

The Aragonese Castle is more than just a fortification. Its spectacular location overlooking the sea and its history have transformed it over time into one of Ortona’s most iconic landmarks.

This is why the images of the fire have so deeply affected the community.

Attention is now turning to investigations of the monument and the affected slope. It will be necessary to understand the actual damage caused by the blaze and, above all, to reconstruct the precise sequence of events.

A night that began with the fireworks of the Feast of San Rocco ended with firefighter sirens, smoke rising above the sea, and the Aragonese Castle illuminated by flames.

And with a question that inevitably remains unanswered: how safe is it to set off fireworks in such a delicate location?
