Era l’8 settembre del 1504 quando, nel giorno in cui si celebrava la Natività della Vergine, venne inaugurato in pompa magna il mio David.

Collocato sull’arengario di Palazzo Vecchio, quando il drappo fu fatto scivolare lasciando il gigante a vista, la piazza esplose con un moto di gioia collettivo.

Il David era stato portato trasportato fin lì dagli ambienti dell’Opera del Duomo, dove per mesi l’avevo scolpito celandolo alla vista di tutti o quasi fino al giugno precedente, quando Soderini volle mostrarlo ai fiorentini nel giorno di San Giovanni.

Da quel momento in poi eseguii alcuni ritocchi, perfezionandolo e conducendolo al punto di finitura che desideravo.

Avevo effettuato la doratura della cinghia della fionda e del broncone, ovvero di quel pezzo di tronco che aumenta la superficie d’appoggio del David, posizionato immediatamente dietro il polpaccio destro.

Volli far realizzare anche una ghirlanda in filo d’ottone con ventotto foglie in rame ma ancora gli storici dibattono sul fatto che la posi o meno su capo del David.

Lo speziale Luca Landucci volle immortalare nei suoi scritto lo spostamento David dal cantiere a Piazza della Signoria in questi termini: “14 Maggio 1504 trassi dall’Opera del Duomo il Gigante di marmo, uscì alle 24h e ruppono il muro sopra la porta dell’Opera tanto che ne potesse uscire, e in questa notte fu gittato certi sassi al Gigante da far male. Havea più di quaranta uomini a farlo andare e penossi sino al di’ 8 Giugno 1504 a posarlo in su la ringhiera”.

La scelta della data dell’8 settembre non è certo casuale a Firenze, una città particolarmente devota alla Madonna. 

Non ci poteva essere altra data più opportuna e di buon auspicio per un evento tanto importante quanto l’inaugurazione del David. Sempre nel giorno della Natività della Vergine ma del 1296, era stata fondata anche l’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.

La collocazione definitiva del David era stata una seconda scelta. In origine infatti era stato destinato a decorare uno sprone dei contrafforti della cupola del duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Con il passare dei mesi e l’avanzamento dei lavori però, fu chiaro a tutti che un capolavoro del genere meritava di essere osservato a una distanza più ravvicinata. Ecco perché venne istituita un’apposita commissione formata dai più grandi artisti del tempo per decidere un’altra collocazione possibile.

Finalmente, il 28 gennaio del 1504, dopo discussioni più o meno accese, la commissione formata da nomi illustri come Andrea della Robbia, Leonardo da Vinci, Filippino Lippi, Davide Ghirlandaio e Sandro Botticelli, scelse come collocazione finale l’arengario di Palazzo Vecchio.

September 8, 1504: The Inauguration of the David

It was September 8, 1504, the day of the celebration of the Nativity of the Virgin, when my David was inaugurated with great pomp.

Placed on the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio, when the drape was slid, leaving the giant in full view, the square erupted with a collective surge of joy.

The David had been transported there from the Opera del Duomo, where I had sculpted it for months, hiding it from all or almost all view until the previous June, when Soderini wanted to show it to the Florentines on the feast of San Giovanni.

From that moment on, I made some adjustments, perfecting it and bringing it to the desired level of finish.

I had gilded the sling strap and the prong, the piece of tree trunk that increases the David’s supporting surface, positioned immediately behind the right calf.

I also commissioned a brass wire garland with twenty-eight copper leaves, but historians still debate whether or not it was placed on David’s head.

The apothecary Luca Landucci immortalized the David’s move from the construction site to Piazza della Signoria in his writings in these terms: “On May 14, 1504, I took the marble Giant from the Opera del Duomo. He came out at midnight and broke the wall above the Opera door so that he could emerge. That night, so many stones were thrown at the Giant that they hurt him. More than forty men were needed to carry him, and it took until June 8, 1504, to place him on the railing.”

The choice of the date of September 8th is certainly no coincidence in Florence, a city particularly devoted to the Madonna.

There could not have been a more appropriate and auspicious date for such an important event as the unveiling of the David. The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore was also founded on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin in 1296.

The final location of the David was a second choice. It had originally been intended to decorate a spur of the buttresses of the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

As the months passed and the work progressed, however, it became clear to everyone that such a masterpiece deserved to be viewed from a closer distance. This is why a special commission composed of the greatest artists of the time was established to decide on another possible location.

Finally, on January 28, 1504, after more or less heated discussions, the commission composed of illustrious names such as Andrea della Robbia, Leonardo da Vinci, Filippino Lippi, Davide Ghirlandaio, and Sandro Botticelli, chose the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio as its final location.
