La scultura del giorno: l’Angelo Adorante di Bonazza
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’Angelo Adorante scolpito dall’artista Antonio Bonazza nel 1744 per la chiesa di San Tomaso Becket ubicata nel centro storico di Verona.
Fu il conte Alvise Manin, senatore veneto, a commissionare questo capolavoro a Bonazza per l’altare maggiore della chiesa meglio nota come quella di San Tomaso Cantuariense.
Scolpito nel candido marmo di Carrara, l’Angelo Adorante di Bonazza sembra sospeso al di sopra di una nuvola. Con il capo chinato verso il basso, si porta le mani al petto piegando il busto verso il basso.
Ha le ali spiegate ed è abbigliato con una ricca veste panneggiata che contribuisce a dare dinamicità a tutta l’opera.
Rimane meno voluminosa e piatta la capigliatura che, nonostante i riccioli, a mio avviso è troppo aderente al capo e schiacciata.
Il tocco di maestria è invece il piede sinistro dell’Angelo, sospeso nel vuoto.
Dovete sapere che lo scultore Antonio Bonazza era nato a Padova il 23 dicembre del 1698. Fu uno dei più illustri scultori veneti del Settecento ed era figlio d’arte.
Apprese il mestiere dal padre scultore Giovanni assieme ai fratelli Tommaso e Francesco. Lavorò soprattutto per arricchire di pregevoli sculture le chiese e i giardini di Padova e di altre località del Veneto. Le sue opere erano particolarmente apprezzate per la loro eleganza e leggerezza: quei marmi sembravano sostenuti dal soffio del vento tanto parevano eteree.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Adoring Angel sculpted by the artist Antonio Bonazza in 1744 for the church of San Tomaso Becket located in the historic center of Verona.
It was Count Alvise Manin, a Venetian senator, who commissioned this masterpiece to Bonazza for the high altar of the church better known as that of San Tomaso Cantuariense.
Sculpted in white Carrara marble, the Adoring Angel by Bonazza seems suspended above a cloud. With his head bowed downwards, he brings his hands to his chest, bending his torso downwards.
He has outstretched wings and is dressed in a rich draped robe that helps to give dynamism to the entire work.
The hair remains less voluminous and flat, which, despite the curls, in my opinion is too close to the head and squashed.
The touch of mastery is instead the left foot of the Angel, suspended in the void.
You should know that the sculptor Antonio Bonazza was born in Padua on December 23, 1698. He was one of the most illustrious Venetian sculptors of the eighteenth century and was the son of an artist.
He learned the trade from his father, the sculptor Giovanni, together with his brothers Tommaso and Francesco. He worked above all to enrich the churches and gardens of Padua and other places in the Veneto with valuable sculptures. His works were particularly appreciated for their elegance and lightness: those marbles seemed to be supported by the breath of the wind, so ethereal did they appear.
