Sulla base della Pietà Rondanini sono due le incisioni presenti: una è assai chiara da leggere, l’altra meno, fatta di cifre e lettere. Sapete cosa significano? Sedetevi comodi che ve lo racconto.

Sulla parte frontale fu scalpellata la dicitura SS. PIETA DI MICHEL’ANGELO BVONAROTA in una data non definita ma comunque antecedente al 1857.

Sul fianco sinistro, sempre della base, è invece presente una testimonianza del proprietario dell’opera da cui deriva l’appellativo ‘Rondanini’.

L’incisione riporta M’G’R’N-°I, che significa ‘Marchese Giuseppe Rondinini numero uno’.

La mia ultima Pietà infatti appartenne al marchese Giuseppe Rondinini che poi fu trasformato in Rondanini.
Il marchese era nato 1725 e nel 1801 passò a miglior vita senza avere eredi.

La sua preziosa raccolta di opere d’arte era custodita nel palazzo che si trovava in via del Corso a Roma, fatto edificare a partire dal 1744 per volere della madre Margherita Ambra, vedova di Alessandro Rondinini.

Non è dato sapere da chi e quando Giuseppe Rondinini, molto amico di Johann Joachim Winckelmann, avesse acquisito la Pietà.

That engraving on the Pietà Rondanini

There are two engravings on the base of the Pietà Rondanini. On the front, the words SS. PIETA DI MICHEL’ANGELO BVONAROTA were chiseled on an unspecified date but in any case prior to 1857.
