Se recentemente siete entrati nella Basilica di San Pietro lo sapete: la Pietà Vaticana è interessata da lavori. Al momento non è visibile al pubblico e così rimarrà a lungo, almeno fino al termine di settembre 2024.

Che lavori stanno effettuando?

Ebbene, in vista del Giubileo 2025, la Fabbrica di San Pietro ha avviato una serie di lavori come per esempio il restauro del baldacchino del Bernini e la sostituzione della vetrata che fu posta nel 1973 per proteggere l’opera dopo l’attentato di Lazlo Toth, completata nel 1977 nella parte più alta. 

I lavori relativi alla sostituzione del cristallo di protezione sono iniziati il 27 maggio e saranno ultimati solo verso la fine di settembre.

Già la vetrata era stata rinnovata nel 1995 e adesso sarà formata da un nuovo diaframma formato da 9 ventri antisfondamento e antiproiettile di altissima qualità e di maggiore trasparenza.

La nuova vetrata è stata appositamente ideata da un team di esperti e verrà dotata di un sistema di ancoraggio ad alta tecnologia, studiato in ogni sua componente per migliorare la tutela dell’opera aumentando la qualità della sua fruizione.

Quindi chi vorrà per i prossimi mesi apprezzare dal vero la mia opera non potrà farlo ma dovrà accontentarsi di vedere il calco realizzato dal Mercatali tra il 1492 e il 1943, custodito nel museo della Sagrestia Vaticana.

Vatican Pietà: it will not be visible until September. Works in progress

If you have recently entered St. Peter’s Basilica, you know it: the Vatican Pietà is undergoing work. It is not visible at the moment and will remain so for a long time, at least until the end of September 2024.

What work are they doing?

Well, in view of the Jubilee 2025, the Fabbrica di San Pietro has started a series of works such as the restoration of Bernini’s canopy and the replacement of the glass window that was placed in 1973 to protect the work after Lazlo Toth’s attack , completed in 1977 in the highest part.

The work relating to the replacement of the protective glass began on 27 May and will only be completed towards the end of September. The glass had already been renewed in 1995 and will now be made up of a new diaphragm made up of 9 shatterproof and bulletproof panels of the highest quality and greater transparency.

The new glass window was specially designed by a team of experts and will be equipped with a high-tech anchoring system, designed in every component to improve the protection of the work by increasing the quality of its use.

So anyone who wants to appreciate my work in real life over the next few months will not be able to do so but will have to be content with seeing the cast made by Mercatali between 1492 and 1943, kept in the Vatican Sacristy museum.
