Quando il David fu mostrato in anteprima ai cittadini fiorentini
L’8 settembre del 1504, nel giorno dedicato alla nascita della Vergine Maria, il David fu inaugurato sull’arengario di Palazzo Vecchio ma sapete che fu presentato al pubblico più di un anno prima?
Scolpire il David fu un’impresa non da poco. Lavoravo a più non posso e nella primavera inoltrata del 1503, la scultura ancora non era terminata.
L’Arte della Lana, la potente corporazione che si occupava di finanziare l’Opera del Duomo di Firenze, scalpitava. M’avevano commissionato quel lavoro e vedendo come lo stavo conducendo a termine, volevano mostrarlo a tutta la città.
Avrei fatto volentieri a meno di far vedere l’opera ancora non completamente terminata ma non non ebbi la possibilità di oppormi e se l’ebbi in qualche modo, non fui ascoltato. Così, con una delibera emanata il 16 giugno del 1503, fu stabilito che io aprissi il cantiere al pubblico.
Il 23 giugno, vigilia di San Giovanni patrono di Firenze, un gran numero di persone attese dinanzi allo spiazzo antistante a quello che oggi è il Museo del Duomo di Firenze. Quando gli fu dato il via per arrivare al cospetto del David si accalcarono ai piedi del gigante rimanendo stupefatti di tanta magnificenza.
Dalla mattina fino a dopo il tramonto non ricordo quante persone accorsero ma vi assicuro che erano tante, fin troppe.

When the David was previewed to the citizens of Florence
On 8 September 1504, on the day dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary, the David was inaugurated on the arengario of Palazzo Vecchio but do you know that it was presented to the public more than a year before?
Sculpting David was no mean feat. I worked as hard as I could and in the late spring of 1503, the sculpture was still not finished.
The Arte della Lana, the powerful corporation that was responsible for financing the Opera del Duomo of Florence, was champing at the bit. They had commissioned me to do that job and, seeing how I was completing it, they wanted to show it to the whole city.
I would have gladly done without showing the still incompletely finished work but I didn’t have the chance not to show the David. Thus, with a resolution issued on 16 June 1503, it was established that I opened the construction site to the public.
On June 23rd, the eve of San Giovanni, patron saint of Florence, a large number of people waited in front of the open space in front of what is now the Florence Cathedral Museum. When they were given the go-ahead to arrive in front of David, they crowded at the giant’s feet and were amazed by such magnificence.
From morning until after sunset I don’t remember how many people came but I assure you that there were many, far too many.
